Does anyone know if it's possible to get a towbar to pull a caravan and similar to fit a 944 S2 Cabriolet. does anyone have a towbar fitted on a S2 anywhere?

putting a trailer hitch on a S2 is "child abuse". If you want to tow something, do it with something else, please. It's a waste of good machinery, towing with a Porsche.

Ignore this kind of thing Dave, whatever you need to do to use your car more often, go for it. I get this kind of cr*p all the time as my 944 has a roofrack on it () for carrying kayaks.

Anyway, if you join the titanic 944 list and post a message for David Owen's attention, he had a towbar he took off his s2 although I don't know if it's a detachable one. Presumably if you had the basic mounting structure then you could get it modified to suit your needs.

Regards,

Mark

Hope that helps...

Well done Davie

If only more caravan and trailer owners would tow with Porsches they wouldn't hold us up so much

Sorry can't help you with any useful ideas though

Witter can accommoadte

In the past I've used a 924 to tow a caravan, even over the alps and pyrenes. Firm suspension, close ratio gears, (no long top cruising gear lesens the constant need to change down/up) etc. Only down side is the fuel consumption.

I've got a tow bar on my 2CV! If it can cope I'm sure your 944 can.

i'm sure it will cope with the straign but i am just worried about a possible mounting place due to the location of the spare wheel and the rear bumper splitter. i am just unsure if i can get 1 to fit or not.

and i also don't see how people can look down their nose when i mention doing something with my car except straight forward driving. It's the only car i have so if i need to do additional driving tasks with it, so be it. why should i have to buy a 2'nd car when i have my dream car on my driveway. not all of us porsche drivers have the spare money to drive 2 cars, all my money went on purchasing this 1.

My dad used to have a towbar on his 944 s2 cab, which he used to tow dinghys. They are definitely available, and I think his was a Witter too. Nought wrong with it IMO.

Brink are the only other towbar manufacturer I can think of!?

Assuming you've already asked your local friendly OPC?!

I remember now, my dads was fitted by Stanley Towbars of Chester-le-Street, I note you are in Teeside so it should be fairly handy for you - details below:

Stanley Towbar Centre
Unit 2, Station Rd
Chester Le Street County Durham
DH3 3DY

Tel: 0191 3871422

I seem to remember they did it a little cheaper because it was something a bit different. Cannot guarantee they will still do it as it was about 13 years ago, but they definitely fitted one to his S2 cabrio - good luck!

Cheers polar, I'll give them a try but it's a shame your dads wasn't detachable, i'd think it would ruin the look of the car from the back when not towing anything with a static towbar there. Cheers for the advice tho, it's all appriciated.

I doubt you`ll be able to get a detatchable one (although you will be able to unbolt the tow ball to leave the vertical face plate). A good towbar specialist will be able to custom manufacture a towbar for you if necessary. There will be designated mounting points on the car upon which to fix it to.

Porsche do a demountable tow ball which is excellent...but you have to buy the Cayenne to go with it.

Good luck and enjoy the `van !

I've got a removable tow bar fitted to my Germanic steed with Porker connections - the RS2 (and a very neat piece of kit it is too). I didn't have it fitted - it was on the car when I bought it - but the manufacturer (Westfalia) might have a similar solution for your 944.

Try Watling Engineers - www.watlingengineers.co.uk Their out-of-date price list shows the following:

944 F.H. Coupé All series Apr 82 - Jun 89 PSCH 3 £149.50

944 S2 F.H Coupé with under bumper spoiler Jan 89 - May 92 PSCH3A £179.50

944 S2 Cabriolet with under bumper spoiler Jan 89 - May 92 PSCH3A £179.50

944 Turbo with under bumper spoiler Mar 86 - May 92 PSCH3A £179.50

I had one of their tow bars on a Fiat Coupe turbo some years back; the bar was not the prettiest but most of the visible bits were removable so it did the job. And much cheaper than the main dealer's bar. Towing a Caterham b*ggered what little fuel economy there was though!
