Think I will try a Cerbera Next
Discussion
After 2 years of owning a 4.0 Chim, longest I have ever kept a second car. My plan now is to sell it on the high, April next year I guess and to buy a Cerbera on the low February ?
I am mechanically competent having built 3 kit cars and SVA'd them etc, as well as a lot of work on the Chim, rebuild RV8 and drive train etc.
My question is to keep funds sensible and as I like to rebuild as much as drive, I intend to buy a sad Cerb and rebuilt it.
Assuming I do a body off and full rebuild what engine Cerb do I go for that stays within the realms of a home garage rebuild.
I can see there are a few options and all out power is not my overall goal.

Go for the V8 I do all my own work and they do not seem to bad to work on to date about to do my valve clearances which is the biggest job really if all is well but at the end of the day it is still nut's and bolts if you can spanner bash no worse than any other TVR.
I can't comment on the sp6 as i have never owned one

Loads of info on here i would spend the long winter nights searching on here here is a few sites to give you a incite and head start.
You can get service manuals and ECU software from here too.

I went from a Chim 400 to a 4.2 ajp so if you have any questions il do my best to help.
Cheers Scotty

I'd go for the Ajp-& I've got a sp6.Main reason being that the later models all have the sp6 so there are plenty of options to buy a speed 6 engines car.Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my Cerb, but there's still a tiny nagging thought that I should've gone for the ajp, just because its Cerb specific.
Believe me though, you will not be disappointed by any of them.
My sp6 makes me smile like the Joker on laughing gas.

The AJP can definitely be rebuilt in a home garage. It was hard work with the limited space but it is possible. The engine itself is fairly straight forward to work on but I think a copy of the build manual is essential.I even stripped and rebuilt the pumps without too much drama.
The chim is my 2nd tvr the first being a chim 400.
i used to go mountain biking every night now i go out for a drive in the chim,(put on 2 stone :-() i suppose i am at one with this car having done 6000 miles in 6 months, its so quick or at least it feels it.. i think as chims go i have one of the better ones and its a healthy 5.0
The cerbera i got a really good deal on, as it had an oil leak and a couple of other problems which was a bit of a gamble, but i got those done in with a 42,000 mile service for about £500, and it now has full service history.
The inside is great, it drives really well, but the power delivery is so different as it revs really highly and i prefer the low down torque of the chim.
It might be that i have an affinity for the chim and i have yet to learn to love the cerbera, ahich i will be putting up for sale soon as i want to try a tuscan.
I am not sure if this was any help at all :-)
If you are ever near stansted you are welcome to come for a drive
oh, and i love the yellow colour of the chimaera

Mark, yes i know unfortunately, but the looks of the tuscan might persuade me as it was a tuscan that made me want a tvr in the first place, i just couldnt afford one at the time. So i have to try one !!
its not that i dont like the higher revving its just comparing it to the chimaera, i recently had a 350z that was high revving and i loved it. i suppose i am fickle, i am trying to like the cerb, and i think i will the more i drive it, i have a bit of a car wanderlust at the moment.
it took me 40 mountain bikes till i found one i wouldnt part with :-)

The Cerb is deceptive on the Torque front, I know the RV8 can feel quicker low down but in reality it has no more 'grunt', perhaps it's just the open air motoring sensation. As an example my AJP has more torque at 2k rpm than a healthy 5ltr RV8 has at peak and maintains it past a rpm where an RV8 wheezes out, an LS will again have more at tick over. If you prefer open air motoring there is nothing wrong with the Chim, refrains from Griff jokes at this point
, it is a fine but different car.
, it is a fine but different car. Well its quite hard to find a sad one in need of a full restore. I looked at one yesterday but the owner didn't look under it like I did and he is now not too Happy with me, anyone would think I made it rusty.
Can anyone suggest places to look for a Cerb that needs a full restore , that is not at 'its all right really' money
Thanks
David
