so, I've got a liking for jerky, only really had the wild west stuff before other than one bag of jerky I had in america which was pretty much the same as the wild west stuff.

I tryed some biltong but didnt like it, BUT, I think that was just that it was some really cheap stuff going on offer in a petrol garage.

so what Im asking really, is whats the difference between biltong and jerkey.

dont really want to spend 20 quid on biltong an find out I dont like it.

Biltong cloud9

Just about to order my Xmas stash from http://www.biltong.co.uk/

I'm not South African, but have loved the stuff ever since traveling there in 2001.

Jerky is sweeter tasting. I can't bear the stuff but I do love biltong.

Waitrose sell a passable biltong in small bags for £2.99. As you've said, the best biltong is very expensive.

biltong is godlike. dry, savoury, spicy.

jerky by comparison is damp and sweet.

Ooh yes. lick

Susman's chilli bites biltong is my favourite, although it should come with a warning not to eat more than one bag at a time.

Ah my thread has arrived (always wanted to say that).

The brands you see at petrol stations and largely supermarkets are terrible. Dry tasteless rubbish.

I've currently got some in my machine. 3 'slabs - 1 normal, 1 spicy, and one experimental marmite flavour.

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

Saved myself a fortune with my machine. There was a time I seriously considered mass producing the stuff until I came across all the H&S considerations for dealing with food (and obviously in this case, raw meat).

The best Jerky I have had was in California that I was taken to by a Yank mate (PH'er too), a family business that was known as one of the places you diverted off the intersate for in the West Coast.

It was night and day over anything I have had in the UK. They made it from top quality beef, and had all kinds of smoked flavours, in three different 'cuts'. The biggests was 'cowboy cut', or something like that which would give your jaw a real workout trying to eat it!

I'll try and find who they are...

I'm salivating at the very thought of biltong!

To answer the original question, there's no comparison in my opinion - biltong over jerky every time. I too am a lover of Susman's stuff - medium, little fat & sliced cloud9

Costco was selling a delicious one for half price a while back, I wish I bought more because it went so quickly.

Clever old ads-by-google has brought up the URL of the SA shop just off Roehampton Lane, SW15:

http://www.biltongstmarcus.co.uk/index.asp

I've never been in since it isn't open when I pass early in the morning, but I hear it's good.

I had some biltong today and found it fatty and tasteless with a texture of flour. I love jerky thou, any good online shops.

There is a butcher in Bracknell town centre who does a great line in SA dried meats, I am currently munching some particularly cheeky Chilli Biltong - He also does a pretty decent drywurst

Got mine from... http://www.biltongcompany.co.uk/

Quick delivery, and lots of choice regarding flavours and texture etc.

What did you go for and what would you recommmend? I prefer dry stuff myself, not fatty ones.
