Obviously we all have the same interest, but obviously in different ways.
These are the reasons why I am a true(IMO)PHer.
Put my window down when I hear a remotely decent car anywhere near me.
Randomly go for drives (even though I drive a Corsa) to Elan Valley, A4069 (black mountain road), the dales etc.
Travel all over the country watching Motorsport, taking pictures etc.
Am more interested if I see say an Escort Cosworth than a Ferrari.
Spend the majority of my money on petrol!
Been to millions of car shows/meets/Sunday services etc.
I live on the classifieds when I should be working.
Will happily go up to someone and compliment/engage in conversation about their car.
I could name every car on the road when I was about three...

What makes you a petrol head?
I used to love shows till things got a bit too cliquey in the classic scene and too boring in any other scene.
I love amateur motorsport, but it makes me want to splash loads of cash on a track car i wont use.
I have however gone off driving everywhere unless i can garuntee it'll be clear and safe and all to myself (Impossible lately).
I still love cars and whenever i see something nice i lower my window, however trying to compliment any driver on his car is met with someone entirely ignoring me, or looking at me as if its a moot point.
Too many people who treat their car as a fridge just to keep up with the jones' has ruined cars for me right now. As much as a i want a bike powered kit, id be so afriad of taking it out it'd be some sort of teritorial animal, looking at me aggresively in my garage and making me too scared to go in.

Just out of interest, why do you think prefering an Escort Cosworth to a Ferrari makes you more of a petrolhead?These are the reasons why I am a true(IMO)PHer.

As this was a first offence, I don't think it even deserves the throwing of a can of Red Bull (maybe a gentle bout of VBRJ would mend the chap's/chapette's ways).I don't have a car so can't do most of the things in the first post - but I knew every car on the road by the time I was 3, and was well into Top Gear and Autocar.

First? Toy cars. I loved them. Real favourites were a 300SL Gullwing, and Ferrari 308GTB, and Lamborghini Marzal, and Oldsmobile Toronado.
Then the Rover 2000TC me Dad owned; red with a black vinyl roof and loads of toggles and switches and green-lit dials inside.
Then the magazines. Autocar / Performance Car / Fast Lane.
I still have a 1989 Fast Lane mag with a feature on the F40 / 959 / Lister XJ-S with the headline "0-170 in 25 secs! But Which One?" (Guess.....)
Fiddling with the engine on my first car (1976 Mini) and getting oily fingernails.
A serial subscriber to EVO and Octane. Yet the quickest car ever owned is a late 80's Jag, and the quickest passengered in is a 1987 Porsche 911 Turbo SE.

-I currently have my fleet back up to 7 again and 2 of those are major projects one a minor one.
-One of those cars I helped design and develop the powertrain of.
-I regularly build virtual engine models in GT Power type of 1D code and correlate to measured dyno data-of engines that take my fancy (to get better understandng) just for fun in my spare time.
[correlated engine models ive built to date include - Porsche 993, 1960s Dodge Hemi, 1960s Dodge big block, 1990s Chevy LS-1 engine, early 90s BMW S50 M3 3 litre , all the M20 BMW engine series and alot of Jag stuff]
-I'm currently rebuilding a Big block Dodge engine for my challenger with some unusual specs
- In case you hadn't gathered I'm an engineer involved with engine R and D- and to start this as a career in the UK you have to be a petrolhead because the salaries are so low!
- I use my vocation to get a deep understanding of vehicles, and I seem to retain weird very nerdy esoteric information that only engineers within the industry could understand- such as the 10-90% burn of a mercedes 3 valve twin plug or the typical frictional apportionment of various components of typical engines, typical volumetric efficiencies of modern N/A engines, typical BSFCs etc
Once someone on this site cited that the more cars you've owned in the shortest amount of time-qualifies you as some sort of king of petrolheads. I vehemently disagree. All THAT means is that you're whimsial, fical and a nicely fashioned good little consumerist that the industry LOVES! I would cite someone spending silly amounts of money on projects that they know they'll never get back as one trait.

Who knows. Mind you, I saw a Ferrari today at a local car interior workshop. No doubt in for a minor re-trim or something. It was far less exciting to me than seeing a Cosworth.
