Driving experience's for young driver

Hi there pistonheads, this is my first topic, and quite a specific question.

Does any one know of any driving experiences that don't focus on the 'exotic' cars and focus instead on the raw skill and learning how to drive faster on a track. I've only been driving since April and this is going to be an 18th birthday present. I would really love to get into track driving.

Any kind of caterham/lotus 7 would be ideal, I just want to get into something with a bit more oomph (the joys of a 1.2 clio) and rear wheel drive! As much track time as possible preferably too.

Well I got a Lamborghini Gallardo Plus experience for my 18th at Thruxton and it was magnificent! After a breifing I drove a Porsche Cayman for 3 laps, then a Lambo Gallardo for 4 laps then a single seater Rormula Renault for 5 laps. Soooo Much fun.

If its speed you're after go for Thruxton, I found them excellent, they really encouraged me to go fast. I reached over 110mph in the Cayman and just over 130mph in the Gallardo and 100mph in the Formula Renault. If its drifting, or a longer event then go for a half/full day at Caterham/Westifeld.

OP- the problem with the above suggestion is you get 12 laps around Thruxton, usually with the bottom two chicanes coned off, and it costs a significant amount of money!
For what you want I strongly suggest you give 'book-a-track' a try, who'll lend you a caterham of a spec of your choice (from their range) for a full day on an open pit trackday format. Okay it costs twice as much, but you get Several times the number of laps, plus professional tuition will be available.
This way you get a real track car, a proper tuition experience and actually a lot of track time for the money.

The single seater experience at Silverstone was good fun although you will need to wait until April as you need to have had your licence for a year. Shouldn't be too far from you if you live in Bucks either.

just been offered a day with one of my dads old mates in his vx220 on a track day with instruction from him which shouldn't be too bad considering he also owns and races a formula ford! thanks for your help though! and yes I think a track day in my 1.2 clio would be rather a catch22! Anyway I think i've just about explored most of its limits on the roads so far!
