Good evening. I believe it's about time to replace my Bose Companion 2 speakers (below)

as now that i've moved to uni they are not quite reaching the volume/bass levels that are required for pre-drinking study sessions. I have seen Bose's Companion 20 setup, which I would consider given the superb service given by my Companion 2s, however am also open to other suggestions in a similar price bracket. Ideally I would still want the sound quality of the Bose speakers, and for them to retain their clarity when cranked up, however to also be happy just idling along when watching TV or gaming. I would prefer a 2.0 or 2.1 set due to spacial constraints, although any reccomendations are duly welcomed!

Thanks in advance smile

It depends how much you want to spend and if the brand is important to you? There is nothing wrong with BOSE products...they are IMHO just overpriced when compared with competitive products.

You may be better off at uni with a decent dock like the KANTO SYD5...loads of volume and decent bass for pre-party sounds and good enough sound quality for background study music.

TBH most PC sound cards, MP3 players and iPod/phones do not justify anything better.

Hope this advice helps and good luck!

I have the Altec Lansing MX5021 2.1 setup for my computer, and can't fault it. Really good clarity and you can really crank up the bass if need be. Bought it on the basis of some very positive reviews, and was well worth it, I think it has a superb balance to it.

Cheers thanks for the replies people smile That sounddock looks pretty good, i'll start looking into it smile

ETA: The Altecs seem to have been replaced by the Ultra MX6021 2.1 system, it seems quite powerful - always been a bit aware of speakers using acryllic for their acoustic properties.. Anyone have any experience with these?

How about some active nearfield monitors?

The audioengine A5 is excellent - I use a pair in one of my Sonos Zones.

I considered the AudioEngine's when I was buying my speakers but couldn't justify the price at the time. I ended up with a set of Edirol/Roland MA-15D's for £120, they blow any standard "desktop computer speakers" out of the water and have a sub output if you feel the need for even more bass (they can kick out a fair amount of bass on their own anyway).
