I have had the misfortune to be using the M4 this week.

Every day there is a image of a red triangle with an car on its roof displayed on the Matrix sign heading towards London.

I have not seen any cars upsdie down, or even any accidents ( although it is possible I missed them on the hardshoulder, I am not much of a rubbernecker )

Does anyone know what meaning the sign is intended to convey ?

Red triangle = Caution
Upside down car = Australians

Therefore sign = caution, Australian drivers

I saw one sign with that once - I was still puzzling what it meant 30 miles later when I pulled off the motorway - great distraction tactic.
What are you supposed to do whan you see it?
Maybe they have to regularly test all the bulbs work
Same as the old signs that used to have 'slow' 30 miles in advance of erm nothing
or I posted about being on the A14 and a matrix sign said 'accident Stevenage'
So?

This is the trouble with signs being designed and operated by people sitting in cozy offices that dont undertand what you need to know
Leave at J22 B4 Stuck traffic.

There was actually a consultation period where you could offer comments on the individual images etc before the signs were introduced.

Not sure if anyone actually commented seriously, however! - as you can see from the replies in this thread smile.

Is that a typical highways consultation period while wearing cloth ears and how pretty the new signs will be?

A few months back travelling south on the M1 Nottingham a number of matrix signs 'A329 closed, long delays'
Now if you you know about road numbering the A329 will be somewhere south of the A4 and checking later south of Newbury.
What did they have on the signs near Newbury
'Mystified drivers M1 Nottingham'

Thansk - as predicted - all useless
What you want to know is whether the traffic is stuck up ahead and whether you need to turn off
None of those give you any help with what to do next so might as well save the leccy

Love the exclamation mark.. Incident or Oncoming. So that could mean either someone has lost a
hub-cap... or there's a 40-Ton HGV coming straight towards you!

I guess "watch out and slow down" is a bit too complicated for you...

Amongst all the messages saying "don't drink & drive" "don't drive when tired" "don't use a mobile phone when driving" "keep your distance", where is the one that warns you "while you're reading this you are not looking where you are going" JMO

youre alrady watching out and have slowed down - what do you do?
For how long do you have to watch out and stay slowed down?
A mile later youve given up and sped up again
Without how far or how long theyre useless

The problem with them is that the information is often out of date. Eg Spray when the road is bone dry etc.

It therefore makes you doubt them when they say- long delays M5 south etc? Is that now? is that warning from 4 hours ago?

When will the government start taking sponsorship on them?

The out of date ones are fking terrible.

On the M6 last week, they had 60, 50, 40 and Congestion signs all leading up to the next exit. We were wondering whether to leave the M6 and take the scenic route, but decided to gamble as there was no sign of any traffic in any way. Just as well, as the next sign said "End".

Morons.
