Slot in filters

Please could someone offer some advice?

I'm after a slot in filter system, currently looking at the Cokin P range.
The question, what do I need!

I have various lenses ranging in thread size from 52 to 77mm, I also have some glass screw on filters with step up rings so that I only need one size of filter.

To switch to the Cokin series I need the filter holder and obviously filters, can I then get away with just purchasing a cokin 77mm adaptor then use my existing step up rings?

Your step up rings should work but be aware they add a little depth to the holder so you may get vignetting at wide angles.

Would larger filters be better then?

Cokin Z? I'll be wanting to use it with a 17-40 on your old 1DS so it will be quite wide.

I'd go for Lee, Hitech or Cokin Z.
