Nismo unleashed on the Juke

Like the Super Juke but slower and uglier, Nismo styling 'upgrades' hint at future performance Nissans

This is the Nissan Juke Nismo concept, set to be unveiled at this week's Tokyo motor show. It is, says Nissan, part of a "bold new future" for its Nismo performance arm (we'll leave it up to you as to whether or not that's a good thing).

With visual and aero tweaks including revised bumpers, arch extensions and side skirts the Juke Nismo Concept certainly looks, er, tough. In fact, the styling mods even include a revised tailgate spoiler with side elements to control airflow more efficiently and lift-reducing door mirrors. It says here.

It's not just a cosmetic package either. The chassis has been lowered and stiffened, while the 1.6-litre turbo petrol has been 'uprated to deliver more power and performance' though precisely what that entails Nissan ain't saying.

Inside, the steering wheel, pedals, gauges, shifter knob and door trims have been redesigned to provide 'greater involvement when driving'. No, nor us.

"As the Concept shows, Nismo brings new levels of individuality to mainstream Nissan cars like Juke," says Nismo President, Shoichi Miyatani. "The future for Nismo is to develop premium sports designs for an ever-widening range of customers."

Jolly good. But can we see the finished Super Juke now, please?

A Juke, so that's what it was...

I saw one squinting at me in a multi-storey in Winchester on Sunday. I thought it was the result of some competition to design the world's ugliest car.

No doubt the heinous form houses some great Japanese engineering. I've often wondered, however, why it is that far-eastern car manufacturers don't employ some European designers to make their cars more aesthetically attractive to us over here. Or do we represent such a small, skint corner of the global market these days that they don't actually care what we think?

I wonder what they are like to drive?

See the 'make one mental to ramp up interest in the lesser ones' does work

What a weird car.

But, it's outlandish looks will probably help them shift a fair few units over here in Europe!

I'd take ugly and distinctive over bland any day (when it comes to cars!)

The stock Juke is as marmite as car as I've ever seen.

I hate it, it's a collection of weird angles and odd design decisions wrapped around a silly car - but it's clearly enormously popular as I can't move without seeing 2...

As for the Nismo version - it's just stripes and slightly different spotlights isn't it? smile

It is visually challenging.... but not entirely unpleasant. Somehow I kind of like it.

For me it's a sad reality that the NISMO tuning guys have nothing better to go to work on than the ugly Juke. GTR aside Nissan no longer make a sports car. NISMO should be getting busy with a nice 2.0 turbo FR car...

Eh, what?! Nissan have some great sports halo models. 370Z & GTR are products that Ford, Vauxhall, Honda, Toyota, VW etc etc have got no answer to.

Apologies, I had completely forgotten the 370Z (it is forgettable).

Anyways, you can't polish a turd (Juke)...

You hardly ever see them, fairly anodyne engine, love it/hate it looks, accomplished but not particularly exciting handling.
