I got chatting to this lady at the same office as me while out for a cigarette. She was complaining about how her headlights were not illuminating the road in front of her his winter and was asking for advice on any new bulbs or upgrades she can do to rectify this. So we took a walk to her car and it was covered in muck... She hasn't had it washed in 6 months!!! I simply asked if she had a bottle of water and a cloth of some sort in her car... I then proceeded to clean her headlamps with the things she has readily available in her car. She hops in a turns on her headlights and they were "miles better"...

So I just realized that something which i do every time i fill up is never done by another motorist. (i usually give my headlights a quick clean when filling up)

Anyone else ever have to solve a "dilemma" like the one i just did?

I would have told her I had a mate in the motor trade and could get her some really good bulbs cheap. I then would have ripped her off.

I have a long handles ice scraper with a scraper on one side and a hard bristled brush on the other.

When I used to drive back roads in the winter to work I'd always brush my lights before I drove off – even then, but the time I got home you could see the difference in brightness compared to when I stared the journey.

I remember one a few years ago, similar situation but the car had a whistling noise as if one of the windows wasn't quite shut.

"can you take a look at it for me?"
"yeah no problem"

So off we go to the car where I close the window that wasn't quite shut!

biggrin

You took the line "you wanna rub my headlamps, big boy?" far too literally.

She's clearly played you with the damsel in distress routine as she didn't want to get her (no doubt) well manicured talons dirty.

Cos I've been lazy and only been cleaning my car every 2-3 weeks lately. frown

And I've just got into a routine of doing it now. Only ever time I don't is when im in a hurry. + I do a lot of back roads so the headlamps get quite dirty quite quickly.

well you are a much better person than me... Last time I saw a girl unable to park her car at work I just sat in my car and enjoyed the show... frown

I think I have something similar. Friend at school had a rattling noise coming from the engine bay but only when cornering one way ( left I think ) and could I take a look.

Mate had a quote from the garage for about £120 to fix the alternator or belts etc. ( this was 1998 so quite a bit of money to a student ).

I admit I was stumped after looking under the car at the wheel bearings, brakes, suspension. Went for another ride and had my head out of the front window like the family dog laugh but still couldn't place it.

After another hour of diagnosis and poking about, I was ready to admit defeat. Went to close the bonnet and saw the culprit

Broken bonnet stand clip! I went to put the little rod back and it came out and clanged against some of the engine. It was now clearly jumping out and clattering ever so slightly under flex against the edge of said alternator. GSF and £0.55 or whatever and a new clip solved the problem. Sweet!

A couple of weeks ago I was worried about a occasional clunking coming from the passenger side. It seemed to happen when I turned or accelerated harshly and I was convinced a bearing was on the way out.

After I spent an afternoon lying in the road under the car looking for anything obvious my OH wondered aloud whether I'd emptied the CD's out of the glovebox like I'd promised.

Oh yeah...

wifey was complaining about her headlights - I just adjusted the height - she'd got them on the 'car fully loaded' setting

rolleyes - as for the OP - I always keep my lights clear irrespective of whether I wash the car or not. Even on icey/snowy mornings always make zsure all lights are clear of frost/snow

1. Give up smoking.

2. Get a non-poverty spec car with headlight washers.

3. Win.

Pop up headlamps are a nightmare for this, they dont even get cleaned when the car does. Took me 2 weeks to find out that on of them had half the glass missing!
