My sister is looking for a new car. Her car is starting to get unreliable had to pay out 105 quid for a pas steering switch that blew itself apart and other bits and peices car is a proton savy.

List of reguirments.

Budget 5-6k
Reliable
Petrol under 1.6
56 or newer
Not bothered on 3 or 5 doors.
40+ mpg

She likes the new mazda 2 a girl that works with her just got one and she likes it. What are they like to live with and any reliablity issues.

Im a mechanic so know whats good and whats not. But ive never worked on a mazda 2 in work haven't really worked on many mazda and heard they are very reliable.

There is a mazda 2 58 not to far from me at £5250 before i go to see it any other cars out there that meets the requirments.

Please no french cars.

Nothing wrong with Mazda2... Cracking little car.

Early ones had a knock from the rear shocks, but most have had modified ones fitted, and very early cars had problems with water getting into the rear wheel bearings, again most have had a modification to prevent it

Other than that, the only thing worth checking is an excessively soft brake pedal - not common, but can occur on some cars

Otherwise, brilliant little things, light, nippy, pretty economical, and bullet proof engines

Is it from a dealer? And if so, which one?

I think they're really good looking little cars.

With effectively the same underpinnings as the Fiesta they'll probably be good to drive as well.

Might as well go for it.

For what it's worth my Mazda 3 has done nearly 272k and is still reliable. I'm sure the 2 will be just as reliable.

Cracking little cars. I bought a new Tamura spec one in March 2010, sold it 8 months later though and would still have it now if I hadn't of needed to sell it.
