I keep looking at my next car choice and the A6 2.7 TDI Le Mans saloon is popping up as a lot of car for the money and ticking virtually all my boxes.

What should I know? Good or bad points? serious issues?

Any help appreciated.

A family friend has just part exchanged his 3.0 TDi LeMans this weekend for a Q7. His had 135,000 miles on it and he absolutley loved it. The only problems he had was the motors for the inlet manifold flaps staying stuck open, the bluetooth module failed and the original Audi wheels had to be replaced as they were buckled causing a bad vibration at about 80mph.

It was that good its taken him a year to find a suitable replacement.

Our 2.7 TDi Manual has also been very good with the only problem being a faulty throttle body and a loud clicking when applying the brakes.

Have you had a drive of one yet? I found the ride quality with the combination of bigger wheels and S-Line suspension too crashy for my liking, also standard audi issue dead steering and over servoed brakes. Not massively impressed with the autobox either, seemed a bit dim-witted?

We were looking at the avant model but after test drives decided on a 5 series touring, non M-Sport. Preferred the driving experience of the BMW and the ride quality, even with RFT's, is far superior. Not everyone is a fan of the styling. but hey, each to their own.

Nice car the A6, but would definitely suggest having a drive first.

Agree with the above, my father in law has one, nice car but a strange combination of hard suspension like a sporty model and the nice lazy delivery of the engine and the auto box, kind of doesnt know what it wants to be.

I haven't driven one as yet, a colleague has an A6 SE and he's pretty happy with it.

I have an E90 M Sport at the moment with RFTs so am used to a crashy ride.

Ideally id like something spacious, reasonably quick, comfortable and able to deal with long motorway jaunts.....the A6 seems to tick the boxes.

Agreed, we had one for about 6 weeks.

My wife hated it and said driving it 'was like riding an unfriendly horse'

Weird analogy I grant you, but I sort of knew what she meant.

Make sure you get a post 06 one as the road tax is over 200 squids less due to lower emissions

Talk to Blueg33 usually found lurking on the Audi Forum. He has a long term 3.0TDi version.

Sounds like exactly the reasoning we went for the 5 Series. Very comfortable, bags of space (2 growing kids of 7 & 10), quick (530D), great cruiser but also an enjoyable punt along an interesting road. It actually feels like it wants to be driven, which is not the feeling the A6 gave me TBH.

Would highly recommend the touring model also, as to my eyes a better looking and certainly more practical proposition.

Even after the M-Sport with RFT's you might be suprised by just how crashy the Audi is, I know I was...

mmmm bit of a quandary then, of course the other factor is that the A6 saloon is noticeably cheaper than a 5 Series.

I have an A6 3.0tdi Le mans Tiptronic, bought new in Mar 2007

TBH I find it to be a very good car (better than my 05 BMW 5 series). I only planned to keep it for 3 years, but reckon that I will keep it for 7 years. It currently has 81k on the clock

The ride is firm but I prefer that to wallowy as it makes the kids less car sick, the 19 inch tyres aren't cheap and on a quattro you have to replace all 4 together.

The tiptronic box is great, I never use the flappy paddles, sport mode gives a very aggressive gear change that is much quicker than the paddles. It also sharpens throttle response. I can select gear with my right foot smile, so IMO the box is pretty good.

Beware the multitronic gearbox in 2wd 2.7 cars, it is well known for problems.

Check that the MMI software is up to date and that EVERY function works properly. Mine has had 3 phone/cd modules in the first 3 years at £1400 a time but done under warranty. It has been fine since.

Check that there have been no spilt drinks in the front cupholder, they can kill the ecu that lives under it.

The car is very fast mid range, but slightly slow off the line as a combination of turbo lag and 4wd bog down, but that is only momentary.

I really like quattro especially for wet roads, plus the balance feels better than the fwd versions IMO

20k miles approx between services

The car is not as nimble as my old 5 series, but its a much nicer place to sit, more comfortable, lighter and more airy, definitely better made. No rattles after 4.5 years.

IMO its best to go for the 3.0tdi as its noticeably quicker for overtaking than the 2.7 and is much the same on economy unless you go 2wd.

We have driven across europe several times 4 up and boot full, so much more comfy than the 5 series. Bigger boot too, all the stuff for a family of 4 on a 2 week holiday goes in the boot (saloon) with nothing having to be stowed in the passenger compartment.

Leg room is good, son is 6ft 3 and has plenty of space behind me driving, I am 6ft.

I had one as a loan car a while ago and loved it. Grunty enough but would always hanker after the 3.0 personally. That aside, lovely car with tons of space and I thought the ride was fine.

If I had the money, I'd look at one myself.

Some bks passed around about it ruining the diffs due to having slightly different rolling radius difference between the worn ones and fresh ones..

Does the pre 23rd of March 2006 ones not fall into the cheaper exemption category anyway ?

Id probably go for the 2.7TDI for insurance purposes. Basically, im looking for something bigger to carry the family (soon to be),is reasonably quick, comfortable and economical. Like I said I have an E90 at the moment, but the ever increasing load of baby kit is choking the BMW.

So that isnt true then?? To be honest having to get a full set of 19s every time would worry me a touch.

I've just replaced all 4 on our A4 2.0T Quattro, they had all worn pretty much identically. So all needed changing together.

The only time you may have an issue, if you want to keep them all of the same, is if you have a puncture.

This is now going o/t !

You dont have to replace all 4 tyres at once but its recommended to keep the tyre wear similar between axles and rotate tyres front to rear so to even out wear. The result of this is likely to be that all 4 are worn out at the same time anyway. The quattro's seem to wear tyres very evenly in my experience.
