Hi All,
I will be buying another set of wheels for my 110 so I can fit so M/T tyres, mainly for greenlaning.
There seems to be a reasonable choice out there, which can make it all too hard to know which brand/tread pattern to go for.
Any pointers on what's good in the mud? I'll be going for 255/85/R16 size wise.
Cheers

Depending on if you want retread's or not, you have masses of choice (dependant on budget). As they are mud-plugging only, you can go quite aggressive and not worry about road noise so much! The BFg Mud Terrains are well-famed but expensive. You have many "copies" of these, that are similar patterns, almost always these are cheaper re-treads, but are available in new. After recently hunting around for a bargain, I've gone for Insa Turbo Special tracks. My 90 is only used to drive to/from off roading of some kind. How do you plan to change them over? In the garage, or by carrying them around with you and doing it on site?
Your profile doesn't show where you are based. I'm in Leicester, and am about to have a set of 4 RR alloys (16's) that my newly aquired tyres came with (I like my current steels). They will be available next week. PM me if you want to know more.
In fact, a picture here:- http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

I'm in Wales and will be changing boots in the garage before setting off.
The BFG MT's have a good rep, it would seem, but their sidewalls are a bit weak when it comes to slate? Fair bit of that around here and I don't fancy getting a slashed sidewall
Mind you, are any other tyres any better?

Kumho KL71s have been pretty good so far. Surprisingly good on road as well, with a good reputation and price point.
It seems these are not available in the size I'm looking for
I'm running 235/75(iirc)/16 - I'm wanting a bit more ground clearance and I've been told that the 255/85/16 will do that and also assist my speedo in becoming accurate (reads 7% low)
Cheers,

That tyre size change will result in an increase in circumference of 9.6%. This is somewhat large and I would not recommend that big a change.

OK, thanks for that, but why not?A chap I go greenlaning with has a 110 Hard Top and that's exactly what he did without a suspension lift. No rubbing, no worries.
With a suspesion lift of 2" or more tyres can start to get somewhat larger, but I don't want to obtain the 'monster truck' look, or need a ladder to get into it

255/85x16 M/T tyres are available from BFGoodrich but are a little expensive these days, they fit fine on Defenders and on stock springs will rub on wheel arch eyebrows off road, you will maybe need to adjust lock stops depending on which wheel rims you have.
The KL71 from Kumho are a good M/T tyre, I have used these on a 110 for about 13,000 miles, must add thet were poor in packed snow, the 265/75x16 comes up bigger than the same size in BFG.
My choice would be BFG as the sidewalls are better.

I had a set of KL71's on my old Shogun beater. I did 20,000 road miles on them and they were excellent. I found them good in soft snow but not great on packed snow.
Compared to the BFG MT's...the Kumho was about the same on wet grass/mud but much, much better on road. Note, those were the old style BFG MT, the newest ones are meant to be very good. Still feckin dear though.

Ah right, probably a bit of a trek. However, if you are prepared to take a drive out to Leicester area than feel free to make me an offer on the alloys. Currently have 265/75 tyres fitted, so fitting the tyres you have planned won't be an issue. The BFG MT's have a good rep, it would seem, but their sidewalls are a bit weak when it comes to slate?
