There are more and more cars advertised on TV/Mags with Auto Parking, but every time I've seen it tested on Top Gear etc it looked terrible! So has there been a jump in how well it works? I don't think I've ever seen anyone doing it on the street but I suppose you wouldn't really notice.
A few on here must have it?

Just saw the Ad for the Focus and started the thread.

Do you mean the gap it had to get into or the gap it left when finished?

Manufacturers must be incredibly confident in it - or very very brave to stick their necks on the line.

Imagine if the sensors fail and squash a toddler behind the vehicle or something.

Can you imagine the lawsuits and the (in the US at any rate) stratospheric size of the claims? yikes

I really cannot believe anyone dares market this.

How does it sit with the regulations of failing to be in charge of a motor vehicle?

Does it does the brake/accelerator too?
I assumed it just steered and left the cotrol of movement to the driver. As you the possible safety implications of a completely self-driving (even parking) car are terrifying.

A friend has one in a VW Touran. She says it works well, but the driver still controls the clutch and throttle etc

Tried it on a Yet iand a Superbs, must say it is very impressive, rather disconcerting though the first few times!

The Lexus on TG which crashed was quite an early example of auto parking.

Its the driver's responsibility to ensure that it is clear and safe to park. Plus the driver works the throttle and brake.

You could have made a similar argument about cruise control, but I don't recall any substantiated stories about it causing accidents even after a malfunction (I researched this after I had a cruise control malfunction)

We picked up the Evoque last week and tried it for the first time at the weekend and although it was disconcerting to use for the first few times it was quite impressive.
I think I'll stick to parking it normally though.
