Guys,

Having recently bought a 986 Boxster, I noticed a water drip beneath the front bumper, this has got progressively worse to the point where the low coolant level light illuminates within about ten miles of driving. I have been told that this is probably the front radiator leaking,I intend to change both rads at the same time but has anyone got any advice as to how feasible it is to change them myself and is there anything else I should look for while I am there.

Cheers Rich Dean

Check the hoses first before you fork out for rads mate. Might be a loose coupler, split hose or something that will cost pennies to fix.

Indeed, its not uncommon for the hoses to come undone. It can be done yourself and isn't that big a job if you're moderately competent with the spanners. You can buy the rads themselves from eurocarparts, so don't go paying OPC prices (same part from same supplier).

They sit behind the air-con rads, so be gentle not to damage the pipework, and bleeding once you're done is a bit of a pain, but can be done.

Its not that big a job - we replaced a 996 radiator in a pit Garage at Oulton in about an hour flat last year (when I say we, I mean 996TT_Stevo did it while I shouted encouragement and avoided getting coolant on my denims wink)

I've done it and yes it is almost definitely the rads! One of mine had burst the bottom and the other was bulging in the same fashion. Apparently this isn't uncommon according to my radiator guy!

You'll need to take the bumper off, the AC rad (can be gently worked out of the way) maybe a few other bits, it was a couple of years ago now!

The bumper can be a bugger to get back on correctly (it looks right but when the bonnet is closed it is a touch too low) so make sure it is right before you button it all back up!

I got my rad from Wessex Radiators in Hampshire and they gave a very good price!
