Evening all,

I was visiting a friend earlier, when I pulled up to park my engine cut out and would not restart.

Thinking it was the battery we jumped it.
After a while it eventually ran for approx 60s without making the horrible rattling noise it used to. We noticed that there was a spray of oil coming from the inlet manifold area and it suddenly cut out again and bled a rather substantial pool of oil all over the road. Needless to say it is not running.

The engine is a 2.0 duratec inside a MK3 mondeo.

Would anyone have any suggestions as I really need some help!

Thank you

More oil needed, it sounds like it's lost it on the road.

As to why it's lost it, you mention it didn't make a sound like it used to. What was that sound, and what might have caused it to make it? It doesn't sound normal....

It sounds dead. Possibly down to the vanes within the inlet manifold. They have probably rattled so much they have broken and possibly been ingested into the engine.

For the past 3 days or so it has made an unbelievably loud rattle.

It appeared to be the auxiliary belt tensioner so I checked that out as it was on the correct side of the block. It turned out not to be this as I inspected it yesterday, even had a used replacement for it but wasn't needed.

I never figured it out.

A rattle like a cam chain stretching and flexing before letting go??

Sounds to me like your engine has now gone up through the Oily Gates of Engine Heaven frown

All I know is it sounded like metal on metal and it's frequency steadily increased with revs.

As tempting as the ST engine is it seems like a bit too much of an outlay for me at the moment.

Im in Edinburgh, dean anyone point me in the direction of a like for like replacement engine as complete as can possibly be?

Ebay or breakers.....there should be a few round scotland. May involve you having to pick the engine up though

Yeah I've got the sports car breakers just on the outskirts but didn't know what the script was regarding complete engines.

Worth giving them a call i suppose.

I can follow instructions using tools quite confidently, if I have the correct equipment is it feasible for me to undertake the swap myself (with some extra muscle)?

Can't really see "sports car" breakers having any duratec lumps in stock....unless there out of a kit car, and fat chance of that!

You will need a pack lift, to lift the engine out.

It would be easier a two man job.

Where abouts in edinburgh are you?

They cater for all models that are offered and have quite a selection, if I new how to upload a picture from my phone I would show you an Ariel(sp) view.

Is it possible to jack the car up and support the engine while it's all being disconnected and then raise the car above the engine?

With a conventional RWD drivetrain lifting the car up is sometimes a good idea due to the angle the engine and gearbox need to be at to clear the body. But for FWD it'll be much easier to just lift the engine.

Alright folks,

I appreciate the comments.

I'm off to bed now, working early.

I will probably spend the night mulling over ideas in my head.

If anyone has any other advice I'd certainly listen(read).

Cheers

I have had a change of heart,

I no longer wish to repair my Mondeo and would like to sell it in either one deal for the lot or sell parts then scrap the rest.

As my car is kept on the public road i will have to keep it insured and taxed etc...

Does anyone have suggestions for how i can extract the most amount of cash in the shortest time???

If you want the most money you'll have to dismantle it yourself and sell the parts individually.

The quicket option is to sell it as 'spares or repair' but you'll get less for it.

I sold a 10 year old MK2 Mondeo on ebay for 'spares or repair' a few years back for £120.
