When starting my RS I'm getting a lot of smoke on startup, mainly from the left hand side. This started happening last week, before no hint of smoke at all, and can be quite dramatic as it is quite a lot. Car was subject to a full engine rebuild 2k miles ago, do I need to get this loooked at ?

Cheers
Jim

Hi Jim, first thing to check is that it isn't overfilled with oil. As you know you can get some oil sepage through the barrels due to the boxer configuration, this can lead to a little oil being burned on start up, especially if the car has been left for a long period of time. I usually start mine weekly and have nothing more than a little condensation burning off.

I would suggest you contact the specialist where you had the engine work done while it is still under warranty, there is no particular reason why there should be different exhaust plumes on an RS if all is well. Hope it is nothing serious.

Thanks, was afraid of that. Do you think it's safe to drive as the place that did the engine rebuild is 200 miles away ?

First time it happened was last Sunday at the Devon PCGB concours. Car had been sitting for about 5 hours, on a slight upwards slope. When I started it to leave there was a hell of an amount of smoke but I put it down to the car being parked upwards (normally parked downwards). Started it up again yesterday for the first time in a week, quite a bit of smoke but nothing as dramatic as the week before. Put it on a flat surface overnight. Started it this morning and reasonable amount of smoke, all from the left hand side.

I would call the specialist, explain the problem and see if he is happy for you to drive it. It will be difficult to asses on a forum or over the phone,,,I would have thought that if the oil level and temperature were constantly checked on the journey and the revs were kept low it should make it.

It really is up to the engine rebuilder to give the nod...if you just turn up with it having driven that distance it could perhaps, jeopardise the warranty?

Spoke to him and he recommended checking the oil level in case it's too high (don't think so as no oil has been added since getting the car back 1k miles ago after post rebuild service), running the car as normal and monitoring oil and smoke levels. Started car up this morning to check and there was a 'normal' amount of smoke out of both exhaust pipes.

'normal' amount of smoke? After an engine rebuild there shouldn't be any smoke whatsoever. I'd take it back to the pace that rebuilt the engine.

'normal' meaning only very slight when I started it up. Started it up again a couple of hours ago and got smoke again out the lhd. After running the car for about 1/2 an hour, I checked the oil which was fine. There is a very noticeable difference between the 'force' of the exhasut fumes coming out each side when the engine is idling; much stronger on the left.

Is it possible this problem is exhaust, not engine related ? Need to wait a couple of weeks before engine rebuilder can book it in.

Not really. I would speak with the engine builder again, and push them to look at it sooner. This sounds like a problem that needs reasonably urgent attention.

Initial diagnosis is soemthing to do with one of the heads (I'm not technical) and that the car shouldn't be driven. Lots of oil around the bottom of the engine and out of the exhausts. 14 grand engine rebuild and it's still letting me down,. Totally gutted.

Jim

This sounds like a nightmare. 993RS's are supposed to be soooo much easier on your wallet than your old 340R...

I hope it all gets sorted pretty soon.
