Hi All,

Of course I expect the tappets to be checked as part of the 12k service, but is it normal/likely that the tappets will actually need adjusting on EVERY 12k service?

Regards,
Olly

Morning Olly,

Just had mine done, they needed kit as some gaps had close quite a bit, 12,000 miles since the last time so the answer is yes and may be better to do them more often that every 12,000 as well if mine was any thing to go by, a couple had almost no gap at all and that could have caused a burnt valve which you don't want.

Just had mine done.

Seriously thought about doing it myself, but in the end I let Paul at PPC do it.

Most of the inlets had closed up (4 thou ish) and some exhausts quite loose

Sounds so loooovely now when warm and the improvement in driveability around the dreaded 1800-2200 mark is so much better.

Top job

Fortunately it's the inlets that close up rather than exhaust, so much less chance of burning a valve. However I completely agree that a 12k interval seems wildly optimistic, I remember adjusting valves on my 2.8 Cologne every 6k and even then they were badly out, however it was trivial job in comparison with the AJP8.

I have my engine in bits at the mo so would be a good time to get them checked. In terms of miles they were checked about 4000 miles ago although i have my doubts.

Anyway does anyone know of someone out there that would come to me to do it, i'm in west wickham kent?

Although it may be possible to do with the heads off (is that what you mean by 'engine in bits'?) most people say that the clearances can only be checked with the heads on, because torquing the heads down changes their alignment.

It is however much much easier to adjust clearances before the cam chain is fitted, because the cam can be fitted, checked, and removed again in less than an hour.

If its the same principal as my old scooby, then it should be done with the heads torqued down and the cams in safe mode. You may have to do two attemps as sometimes the values change?why i dont know but you will end up with some spare shims.

How would having the heads torqued down on an over head cam engine alter the tappet gaps?

Unless you distorted the heads of course.

I have taken rocker covers off, sorry for confusion. I have the exhaust and inlet manifolds, air comp and alternator off, that's bits to me smile

Then all you need to do is carefully follow the instructions in the workshop manual. http://www.tvr-cerbera.co.uk/files/WorkshopManual/...

I think we're comparing the ideal world with reality, and in the real world the gaps are likely to change (or so I'm told by those that have tried both).

i was thinking exactly the same as you lol.
if the heads are on or off it should not make a scrap of difference to shim clearance unless either your head or block are warped in which case you have far bigger issues than adjusting clearances.

on another note i need to do mine after xmas.....can someone tell me where i can get the shims from please and also direct me to any relevant threads thanks smile
