Last night I went to see Wolfsbane, supported by Dukes of Agares & Obsessive Compulsive, a diverse line up for sure.

The Dukes, a friend of mine is the drummer in the band, so I've seen them a few times and they delivered their usual blend of guttural roar and heavy riffage. I love it, it's my kind of music, although I feel it may have been a little lost on some of last nights crowd.

Obsessive Compulsive, a punk-ish style band with distinct metal overtones from Manchester. Not my sort of thing really, but Kelii was certainly giving it her all and they did have a catchy quality. It certainly wasn't a case of disappearing off to the bar for a support act, like I have done at small venues before.

Wolfsbane, now I know about the 'Maiden connection' and I had heard that Blaze Bailey was a bit of a 'character', but I had never actually listened to any of their music. Don't know why, just never got round to it I guess. So the main act come on, first up Jeff Hateley the bassist, a demur looking chap wearing the usual black top, black trousers and converse style trainers. Next, Jason Edwards, guitarist, jeans, t-shirt etc. Next drummer Steve 'Danger' Ellett, this where things got a little bit erm, different, he rocks up on stage wearing a straw cowboy style hat, a pair of mirror lensed Raybans, a beige blazer with black trousers and silver trainers. His cock teaser moustache caused my some bemused looks between my group of friends and questions of why I had taken them to see the Village People, they later admitted to being mistaken in their presumptions. Then an older gentleman blessed with a sizeable beer belly, in a dressing gown wanders on to stage, the band begins to play. This older chap immediately starts to remove his robe, cue the until then moderately quiet crowd starting to go utterly mental, this was the arrival of Blaze Bailey, much to his adoring audiences delight. Like I say, I'd never heard any of their music before, but immediately their groove makes you want to jump around and Blaze's crowd pleasing antics is a pleasure to watch. They are a thoroughly infectious band, a proper party band, everybody has a good time, it would seem including themselves which does make a change these days. An hour of great music and some anti Simon Cowell speeches later and the band leave the stage, to return for an Encore a few minutes later of course, with Blaze appearing to be forced on by the road crew added yet more to the Pantomime effect of their stage show. The band were in the bar after their performance mingling with their hardcore fan base that had shown up to watch their heroes, a really nice touch I think.

Probably one of the best tenners I've ever spent on an evening out! If they play near you and it's vaguely your sort of thing, go see them, I'm sure you'll have a great night.

They were the first proper group I saw live (Preston Guild Hall, Oct 1st, 1990) and the experience blew me away, I was a fan already at that point (and wore the letters of the album tape which was usually a sign of it being a good one) but the live show was great to watch from the front. They were supporting Iron Maiden who went on to put on an even better show but the Wolfsbane side of it remains a very fond memory.

I saw they were touring again and was tempted but I'm expecting the arrival of my first child any second so thought it best to be on standby closer to home.

I saw Maiden earlier this year, they were brilliant, but I was both hoping and ROM a certain extent expecting them to be. This was a bit of a whim, I was going mainly to support my mates band, so they blew me away!

Best of luck your forthcoming arrival thumbup

Saw Blaze at Camden Underworld last year and he was fantastic. Had that look in his eyes that said he was doing what he loved for people who loved him doing it. May have seen a few pies since the Wolfsbane and Maiden days, but the man seems as honest as they come and doing it for all the right reasons. Playing there again on 9th December, so hoping to get to that.

Wolfsbane are excellent. Blaze always puts on a great performance weither its a small solo accoustic gig in front of 10 people on a monday night, with his heavier solo project, or with bane, infront of a hungry crowd of 'howling mad smegheads'

Will be seeing them this weekend at Hard Rock Hell.

Oh yes, I was talking to one of the chaps I went to see them with and he'd gone back and checked them out on YouTube and he said that he didn't get it, but when he saw them he loved it!
