'Biggest' Club: Discuss
Discussion
In response to a point made on another thread concerning whether Swansea are a bigger club than Sunderland, I think the PH massive (football section) should peer rank the whole league in terms of 'biggest club' down.
I'm not too sure what constitutes 'big', whether it is trophy success (historical?), fan base, money spent/in bank, games won, but it might be an amusing exercise...
My starter for ten, feel free to copy/paste and add your own proposed relative positions and comments:-
Man Utd
Liverpool
Chelsea
Man City?
Arsenal

To define which club is the "biggest" I think you really need to look at the last twenty to thirty years or so of the clubs history combined with fan base and also longer term history. Obviously in this day and age budget makes a big impact.
For example I would say Everton are a bigger club than Newcastle. Firstly, they haven't been relegated for 70 years, under Moyes they have consistently finished high in the "best of the rest" league and also going back to the 80's they were the best team in the land for a couple of years. In the 80's they were most definitely one of the big five of Liverpool,Everton, Man U, Arsenal and Spurs.
Talking about the current top teams...I'd have it as Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal equal second, Chelsea, Spurs and then Man City. Obv City would not have even been mentioned in that context three or four years ago. Chelsea have obviously had a lot of success in recent years but they have no history of success to fall back on and have had trouble selling out Stamford Bridge which given their success, the fact they are in London and the fact it only hold 40,000 is big negative on the "bigness scale". Spurs are up their for their history and fan base more than anything.....they've not exactly won much in the last twenty years and have only qualified for the Champions League once which is a big negative on the bigness scale! I think a lot of people would have Liverpool lower but they have a huge history, have won the Champions League recently and obviously have some great supporters.
