It was interesting listening to the American General on newsnight a few days ago. Essentially he said Afghanistan can no longer have a solution which excludes the Taliban which sure is different from their 2001 position where they aimed to rid Afghanistan of the lot of them.

I doubt President Karzai sympathises with much of Shariah but to remain in power over there what choice does a leader have? Democracy is all about what the people want and over there a large section of crazy religionists want to live in such laws. Who are we to say they can't?

Near complete lack of education across the country, totally male dominated society, completely corrupt leadership and religious intolerance = medieval attitudes.

The major issue though is that it was not always this way.

Until relatively recently it was, like Iran, a very forward thinking country in terms of the education of all sexes and so forth.

The Russian defeat is when the current issues started as the vacuum left by their withdrawal was filled by religious nutjobs.

One thing that history shows though is the not one single foreign power since, iirc, Genghis Khan has successfully been able to conquer Afghanistan and hold it.

All the above very true and who do we have to thank for playing a very large part in the creation of the Taliban,( AKA religious nut jobs ) who were formed to fight the Russians?

Let me think...

USSR, Saudi, China, France, Cuba, ...

Sorry having trouble here, Can't Imagine Anyone would be that short sighted wink

ETA it would be even more stupid than truning a blind eye to guns crossing an international boarder into the hands of known criminals.
