Someone hit my car, should I report it to the Police?

Someone's driven into my car whilst it was parked in front of the house and didn't leave a note (wk3rs!). The driver's door and front wing is dented plus some of the paint is scratched. We live in a small street that's a dead end so I am pretty certain that it's someone who lives here. Should I report this to the Police for insurance purposes?

By all means get a crime number, if they'll even give you one for this type of incident, but don't expect them to give a flying f**k about it.

Yea, I wouldn't expect them to. Just wondered if I need a crime number to claim on insurance?

Yes definately. Then if you find the person who did it they can be done for leaving the scene.

Any chance you can check other cars in the street for incriminating evidence ?
In a weeks time you regret it if you dont inform the Police.

Yes report it.

It would be possible (although unlikely) otherwise for the other driver to have reported it to the police and for you to be done for leaving the scene of an accident.

Yes report it. You'll get given a crime ref number. Same thing happened to me when I was parked a few months ago.

To their credit the Avon & Somerset police actually sent an officer to make enquiries in the local area and I even had a personal call from the guy they sent after I'd reported it. They didn't find anything unfortunately but I was surprised/impressed that it ever left the station, as they effectively told me there was nothing they could do when I reported it!

Unfortunately I'm away for three weeks but did phone the Police and they gave me a reference number for when I get back. We've also got someone staying at our house so they're going to check all white cars (I had white paint on my car) in the street for any damage/marks on bumper.
