Any suggestions?

Currently thinking either an early MINI R56 or a late Golf MK5.

Needs to be reliable and capable of doing 20k motorway miles per annum in comfort. Preferably chain driven as I don't want to be dealing with cambelt changes. High mileage doesn't put me off as long as it has a FSH.

If it needs to be as new as possible I cannot imagine why you are thinking Mini or Golf? They are amongst the oldest hatchbacks £5-6k will get you!

If you want to do 20k a year in comfort then you need to move up from hatchbacks, especially the Mini.

Fair point but seems a bit pointless going for something bigger if 90% of the time its just me in the car. What would you suggest?

Size has nothing to do with how many people are in the car. Do you think people who buy Jaguar XJ's and BMW 7 Series do so because they often carry people around? Of course not. The larger the car the longer the wheelbase the more compliant the ride and generally the more well specified it is, the more comfortable it is and the quieter it is inside. All good things for doing 20k a year.

Looks like it'll have to be a diesel if you want 45mpg

Skoda Fabia VRS, 2007ish
Ibiza Cupra TDi, 2007ish
Leon Cupra TDi, 2006ish

You should be able to get any of them with under 100k

Why would anyone wish to do 20k a year in a Seat Ibiza?!

I'd be looking for a Volvo S60 D5. Thats how you do 20k a year in comfort, certainly not in a little shopping cart like an Ibiza.

I imagine it will be more comfortable than the Mini, my mother had an R53 when I was younger. Horrible seats

All things relative though.

Given the comfort and ease with which a big car will cover motorway miles, and still do 45mpg+ in diesel form, you'd have to be something of a masochist to want to do 20k miles a year in a hatchback. I'd have to agree with Fox- that a big Volvo would be worth looking at. Personally I'd be quite tempted by a Jaguar S-Type 2.7d V6, but its styling doesn't appeal to everyone and you'd have to settle for ~40mpg+

Blow the age and mpg, get a Roller Silver Cloud or some shed of the week stuff. Or Maybe an older 3 series or 9-3?

Well, I have to agree, but I was just giving him suggestions for what he asked hehe

If he would have asked what motorway barge, my 320d does a pretty good job of it. 50mpg is a piece of piss on the motorway

OP, I think you are headed for a golf tdi (1.9 or 2.0), a very common car but the obvious choice given what you have specified

How big are you mate? I'm about 6'1", 90Kg (company director, shaved head, martial artist etc).*

I can't drive a BMW mini in comfort for 5 minutes, never mind for the 465 hours it would usually take me to do 20000 miles (my lifetiem average speed is 43mph).
I've a 3 series specifically for this reason - it's about as small a cabin as I fit in comfortably for long drives.

*obviously not all of these are true.

Agreed.
I'm averaging 30k PA in a Fabia vRS and I'd still be anoyed if I was doing half that!
