Suppose that you had overlooked that your tax was running out on wednesday and you were also due your first MOT, the tyres are touch and go but cannot be replaced until saturday. Can you get away with MOT'ing the car tomorrow (It may fail on tyres) and then getting the tyres sorted on saturday and getting a retest plus getting the tax done. Or will the DVLA not notice payment being 4 days late?

Cheers.

RFL expires with MOT on Wed 30th June 2004.

Use after this date in pure law, without taking action to renew, these offences:

No Excise Licence
No MOT
Fail to display current Excise Licence.
Duff tyres.(Might get away with it if mariginal)

But so that you can get an MOT, providing that you PREBOOK an appointment, you can drive to MOT Station for test, from Test Centre to a place of repair and back again, then back home. All this without Excise Licence or the initial MOT. No such exemption for duff tyres.

Now DVLA have been known to be understanding and not take action within the first few days of expiry of RFL, but this is not etched in tablets of stone. Always a good chance if you get stopped then RFL straight away before BiB's report reaches DVLA.

Mate has seen sense and driven 200 mile round trip to get tyres, and at a very good cost. Car booked in for MOT tomorrow, he just wanted to know.
Cheers.
