Best of both worlds for just shy of 3k

Hi all
Im not a regular user, but long time lurker. You guys always throw up some great ideas in what car threads. So here's my predicament. With the sale of my Lupo coming up and some cash saved I should have around £2700 to buy a new car. This time I don't want to make the same mistake as I did with my last car as it was utterly pointless for what I needed.
Im looking for something quite small (we have very limited parking) that seems impossible. I need a car suitable enough to do the motorway cruise too and from uni with a couple of holdalls in the boot/backseat then the quick jaunt to work down both NSL lanes and a little bit of dual carriageway. I am willing to take a bit out of the money towards insuring something that would be more suitable for what I need.
Ive been looking at 1.5 dci clios and alike. Would that be my best bet?
Over to you PH.

Classic Mini. Scientists have proven that you can fit the entire contents of the world in them, and that they are in fact the inspiration behind the tardis. The door bins alone are sufficient to carry a family of 4. Crap on the motorway, but the fact they're cooler than penguin poop makes up for it.
If you want something newer, have a look at the Audi A2, light years ahead of it's time, quirky and fun, and great cars.

No way on earth would I be able to insure a GTI at the moment.
Ive looked into the Fiesta Hdi, seems a good choice. My stepdad has a mk6 and its a really nice car actually. I don't know if I would get one in budget.... maybe. *sneaks off to classifieds*
Things like yaris' are a little too small.
Thanks!

See this is why I like pistonheads. I would have never thought of an A2 but I think the man at admiral would take my entire bank account to insure one. Even though as a student walking around with an audi key in my pocket would be pretty cool.
Cheap as beans to insure
Well, they were a few years ago, these days I doubt the existence of cheap insurance at all, but I don't see them being much more than some of the others suggested.
You could get a very nice Focus for that money. A Diesel would have more mileage and be older than a petrol but as someone else has said you need to work out whether a Diesel is worth the extra or not.
If insurance is a worry then a 1.4 would be your best bet. If you can stretch to a 1.6 though it would be a lot better.
My mum had 2002 1.6 Focus Ghia for 3 years (2005-2008) which she then sold onto to me which I had for another 2 years. In all that time the only thing it ever needed apart from servicing was a new alternator belt.
It was a fantastic little car to drive and own and the only reason I got rid of it was because some a
hole decided to pull it front of me at a set of lights at 40mph and write it off.

At the moment I'm driving a 1.4 206 i'm borrowing of my family and its OK. Its been the family hack for years, I think 3 of us learned to drive in it. Its not fantastic on the motorway, its not very stable.
Funnily enough, when searching for anything with a 1.0 - 1.4 engine a few RX-8's came up on my search, The petrol head in me got a little bit excited for just a split second. ~
I think a focus seems to be a good shout. The family has had two now, both 1.6 zetecs. Great cars, Ill see if I could insure them as I thought they were out of my league of insurance for now.
Oh and thanks for the snippets on the big petrol v diesel debate.
