TVR left outside, major rain storm ...
Discussion
my wedge is outside waiting untill I get the garage built or the warm weather comes whichevers first. It has a drivers door off and quarterlights out and has a cover and second sheet over it.The strong wind over the last week has realy took its tole and Iam ...... off,It needs a dry home.
When I first bought my 390 it lived outside in the street. A couple of months after I got it I had to go to Saudi for several weeks, during which time it rained heaven's hard here. I got back to find three inches of water in the passenger footwell. Once I'd Vax'ed it all out I got several kilos of silica gel to absorb what was left (no way was it going to evaporate in December).
I told a mate (Paul C.) who worked in a Mansfield textile mill and he said he had just the thing to use as a car cover... waterproof cloth! Their standard quality control test involved a frame, a clock and a bucket of pig's blood. Stretch cloth over frame, apply pig's blood and start the clock. If any blood soaked through within 24 hours the whole roll of cloth would be scrapped. A particular batch had (allegedly) failed at 23h55 mins
so a length was 'acquired'. However I pointed out that it was a bit light, the wind would have it away in no time so Paul came up with another cloth, in appearance similar to denim but with fast-drying water-wicking properties - it was intended for a new US clothing range. It's probably called Gore-Tex or Acranyl or something now...
I duly made some templates and my wizened old mother sewed-up some sandwiches of cloth that became a cockpit cover. Ten years later it's still 100% waterproof. Yes it gets wet, but the outer cover dries in no time and the inner cover lets nothing through, so most importantly, no rain gets into the car.
Incidentally I still have several kilos of silica gel in case anyone gets stuck
