Hey guys im looking at a cheap runaround and a renault clio seems to be very cheap with low miles, im looking at sort of 07/08 reg so its the old or new shape.

On the reliability index its got 5 out of 5 stars, does anyone agree with this? renault in general are bad but is the the clio ok for reliability? thanks

im looking at a 1.1 or 1.2 petrol

I had an '02 plate.

All the important bits worked. Strong engine for a 1.2, developed by Nissan iirc.

Bought it at c.120k, thrashed the bloody arse off it most of the time, only burned a tiny amount of oil.

ABS sensor rings are a weak point, crappy sintered things crack and result in dodgy abs activation. Easy to sort though.

Get one without a sunroof if you can. Mine was more of a rainroof, whether open or closed!

Any other questions just ask. I had most of it in bits at one time or another, so know them fairly well.

what was your actual mpg like?

the 1.2tce clio the new one seems to get like 38 instead of the quoted 47,

im looking at a 07/08 which is also quoted 47, if im getting 38 i might aswell keep my car...

The Campus model has the 1.2 8v engine which also appeared in the previous model, as opposed to the 16v.

Largely reliable, the rest of it is tried and tested Clio mechanicals of course, a good way into a newer runaround.

I had one of the previous shape models (2001 Frog Face) with the engine in Grande trim from brand new and it was a cracking wee car, even for 40 mile motorway commutes.

the 2007 model is still 8v yeh?

what was your actual mpg like? people seem to be getting about 40mpg, im debating whether to get it over the diesel because diesels have more punch and are better on fuel but if they go wrong they are expensive to fix lol

We have a clio campus sport sat on the drive, that needs an MOT then it will be up for sale. Had it since new 56 plate returns 40mpg round town. Never had any problems with it.

A mate of mine had a 1.2 16v 2002 Clio and had a few problems with his. A few simple fixes went wrong, one was the coil pack going when we were in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales in the middle of the night. We had to walk to the nearest village in the pitch black so that someone could find us and pick us up.

The biggest problem he had though was the gearbox went on him. He got a reconditioned one for £700 I think it was, which isn't a bad price but still a major job.

Edit: Forgot to mention that all this was back in 2008 so that car was 6 years old at the time and had 50,000 miles on it.

Me too, great little car. Spanked it mercilessly at all times and it was completely reliable over the 29k miles I had it. I got a tad less than 40mpg though.

Was some time ago but I remember getting 360 miles on a tank, which equates to just over 36mpg. I did rev the nuts off it though and it did spend most of it's time in traffic on the way to Richmond.
I think the later 16v engine was more economical.

Oh and I had a 1.2 turbo Clio hire car for two weeks once and that got about 33mpg with the same type of driving (traffic, and spanked when there wasn't any)

Any excuse....

Decent enough choice though - friend still has his and it hasn't missed a beat since new.

Ahh, I hadn't realised that the campus had the 8v lump. Mine was a 16v and was a cracking little engine. Never went below 40mpg, no matter how hard I thrashed it, and boy did I thrash it!

I would be looking at a late 16valver with all the toys if I were you. Mine had auto lights, auto wipers, a really good trip/mpg computer, sports seats (which I found to be very comfy) and an uprated cd stereo. Fun handling too for what it was (was an 'extreme' model, may have had different shocks?)

Seems crazy the fairly low mpg you're getting. My OH has a 2003 206 GTI and returns between 36/37 mpg... My old 172 Cup got similar to her 206. Got to be worth not much difference in mpg for the extra grunt.?

I suspect if I was driving a 206 GTI or a 172 cup, they wouldn't be returning 36mpg! I suppose mpg can't really be directly compared because people have different journeys and different driving styles.
When I bought a 45bhp fuel injected polo, I got 37mpg over a tank!
