What convertable for £1500

No apologies for a what car? as you were well aware by the thread title!!
I myself am looking at an MR2 @4K or so, and the thread yesterday was most fortuitous.
My mate has now decided he wants a piece of the action. He has £1500 burning a hole in his pocket and wants a rag top.
For the money, an MX5 is of course the obvious candidate and my recommendation - but he wants to see if he can find anything a bit different.
I'm thinking a spridget or spitfire in need of some TLC may work/ Things like Barchettas still a shade out of price range I think.

I keep looking at cabriolets at the moment due to the seasonal prices that affects them. Your mate has a similar budget to me.
So far I concede the mx5 is the cheapest option and gets the most car for the money if you are only after a 2 seater but a few more choices (in no particular order) are
MGF 1.8 vvc, yes people will tell you head gaskets always fail but I have 2 friends who own them and on in particular gives his car hell, especially from cold and neither have had HG go! From what I understand if it does fail you can use newer parts from Lotus/Land Rover which eradicate the problem.
Honda CRX Del Sol, the VTI especially. Always find the roof quite fascinating and different to most, like a advanced MR2.
Alternatively if you are prepared to consider 4 seater options:
E36 BMW 3 series - surprisingly easy to pick up a 325/328 within budget that are in better condition than saloon/coupe versions. OR you may prefer the E30 or even a early Baur conversion!! There are even a few Z3s available sub £2k that are worth considering to!
Audi 80 - V6 is a wonderful engine making more of a grand tourer than a simple nimble sports car. Likewise mk1 golf cabriolets, the GTI is quite a giggle but not really the same as MR2/MX5s

Del Sol would be so much better if it was RWD... but for me a convertible really should be RWD.
However, if FWD is acceptable, and you want something different, what about a Barchetta? ETA just read the first post again, thought they'd be cheap by now.

Everyone knows MX5s arent that fast but thats not what they're about. They're about having fun. I've had lots of cars that are faster than MX5s but few can match the fun they provide. The Del Sol / CRX is just another hot hatch realistically.
Also you wont get a Mk3 MR2 for £1500 unless its completely f

ked! I always thought the DEL SOL was a Jap import version of a CRX, still with a metal roof electric or manual.
The Jap SIR version is even faster, approx 170bhp standard. I had a Civic SIR in 1999. My MR2:

A friend of mine has one of these. He restores cars, and I reckon it's probably the cleanest one in the country! The roof mechanism really is a wonder, though if it goes wrong it'll probably be catastrophically expensive to fix...if you can find anyone who can fix it! It's also a FWD car, very different to the MR2. Funnily enough, it was this bloke who suggested I get an MR2 in the first place, as he has had quite a few of them. He loves them!

In the UK we had the ESI a 1600cc 123BHP and a VTI 1600cc 160BHP
