0-60? glacial

what do they handle like? ste, it's 2.5 tonnes

the brakes are massively over servo'd and they're awfully uncomfortable to drive

the only thing that they have going for them is that they're very cheap to run and can turn on a six pence

I thought about abut buying an old (cheap) one if/when the new evening Westminster parking laws come in, I only work in London in the evenings, any self respecting Cabbie is either at home or out working, so many of the 'middle of the road' Taxi parking bays are unused. Figured no traffic wardens will check to see if it is properly plated as a cab, as opposed to private use. Probably get away with using bus lanes (?), not sure about congestion charge.

The turning circle is dictated by the width of the road outside the Savoy - a cab needs to be able to turn around outside it in one "go"

Is there still decent money in the taxi trade?

Could not believe how utterly cramped and uncomfortable these things are. Even the newest ones are cack. Considering the drivers need to spend a good 8-12hrs behind the wheel for 30+k I would have expected a bit of luxury!!

Seperate heavy duty chassis that wouldn't go amiss under a small truck and still coach built. The companies that build then havn't advanced (apart from a slight design change from the old fairway type) in the use of composite materials etc. the converted peugeot van/people carrier types are just as bad as they are pretty heavy to start with and when converted the materials they use to trim them out are heavy aswell.

I thought the same. They seem to have thought "okay, this car's going to cost more than an E-Class and the driver's going to be behind the wheel all day every day, so we really need to make the interior at least as good as an 80s Datsun".

As with most self employed job it's all to do with how many hours you put in.

5am starts for the airport jobs will see £150 in the bag by 10 am or working nights will make money.

It's not 9 to 5 but you can clear £45/50k a year.

Last one I went in from Mcr airport to Wilmslow was £23 (inc tip), was driven by someone who appeared to have just arrived from somewhere where English isn't the first language and the have no traffic laws, was driven flat out which isnt too bad given the performance but faster than was sensible given the crap dynamics and what appeared to be no damping whatsover, horrifc journey that made the nine hour boredom of the flight seem pleasant !

These things are heavy because they are built like tanks on a heavy duty ladder chassis to survive hundreds of thousands of unforgiving taxi miles.

They are then rebuilt and put back into service.

London black cab drivers can earn a decent living, it isn't as straight forward to become one compared to a minicab though.
