Clutch on 350 transit

I've just been told by my local garage it's going to cost £1500 to replace the clutch on my 55 reg 350 transit LWB.
He said it will need a new flywheel as its a dual mass clutch. Is he trying to pull my pants down?

Ive no idea how much work is involved. But if it has a DMF ( very likely ) then the chances of it not needing replaced are incredibly slim.

A quick search on egay and a Luk DMF is around £365 on its own, nevermind the clutch kit.

But many vehicles fitted with a DMF can be replaced with normal solid flywheel kits with no real negative side effects. So will often be a cheaper option, and the flywheel will certainly never fail.

Egay seems to offer complete flywheel/clutch kits for under £300. No idea on how good or brand that is though. The ad I'm looking at doesnt state.

So either way, £1500 does sound a bit excessive unless there is a horrendous amount of labour involved.

But as you can see, parts could easily amount to £600 or thereabouts depending on what route you take.

Dealer prices on the DMF will be much higher

I had to replace clutch and DMF on my Combo van just a few days ago. Dealer wanted £600 for the DMF. I got a Luk one locally ( same make as original anyway ) for £200

Thanks for the reply, I was just on the net reading they do a kit as you posted.
The real pain is I brought the van 2 months ago !!!

Thats life ! And clutches dont last forever, especially when a DMF is involved.

I was stuck with having to replace it on my van as nobody makes a solid conversion kit.

The DMF have a nasty habit of disintegrating too and ruining the starters on most of the later Transits. Look into getting a solid flywheel and clutch kit if you want to save yourself a lot of money in the long run. A friend did it recently and said it was a simple job to do. Ford listed them as a common fault and did a recall on a few models so worth looking into.

conversion kits are half the price of dmf and last longer iv fitted quite a few

We have 2 of our fleet of transit vans with flywheel problems. Only got to last until January and then we are replacing them. Joys of DMF.........
