OK so the Range Rover may not suit 180mile round trip each day, so instead of selling what car would be goo to buy as a daily hack?

I would be interested to know 2 things...what you folks think is the most economical car to buy in this case and what car offers (maybe not entirely the best on fuel but still very economical)the best the best bang for buck.

Cheers in advance.

Real world you'll do hard to beat the Pug 106 1.5 non turbo diesel. Walking may well be quicker though.

Astra MK4 ECO4. I challenge anyone to find a cheaper car to run.

Did Guildford to Glasgow and back on one tank (72mpg) due to tall gears.

Mk4 astra so nearly everything is cheap as chips.

Group 5 insurance.

£30 road tax.

Theres one on trader for under £900 at the moment.

Currently running an Arosa TDI which is also £30 road tax and does 10p a mile (400 miles to £40).

Yup. Run on petrol fumes and rarely go wrong; cheap to fix if they do.

Nope. The total ownership cost is much higher than a £2k Micra.

A Micra cannot carry four adults with luggage in comfort ie a family car. Micro is a small city car designed for two adults.

But has to be said why would you compare a £2k Micra against a £18k Golf?

That was not what the OP asked. He asked for the cheapest car.

I reckon anything with an early HDi engine has to be in with a shout at being cheapest to run overall; modern enough to be pretty economical but avoids lots of the pitfalls of the later common rail diesels. My Picasso (I know) HDi cost me £2000, does over 50 mpg and has been reliable in the 15k I have done in it. A Xsara hatch/306/406 might be a good bet.

My 1998 1.9tdi 90bhp Seat Cordoba almost does that, well 65mpg is easy enough have seen 74mpg on a long run. Cost to purchase would be 1/10th of a Bluemotion.

My Micra was £750 I don't think a brand new golf is 24 times better then it and certainly not 24 times more reliable
