No - not the Greek philosopher but the Brazillan footballer..

Just heard the news on Irish Radio (RTE). He was aged 57 and died in hospital following an intestinal infection.

A fine player, and a doctor as well from memory. A proper qualified medical doctor that is.

Yup, proper doctor, fine footballer, cool dude in his playing days and, unfortunately, alcoholic (which killed him).

He was amongst the very first Paninni world cup sticker book I had, along with Zico, et al. Superb footballer.

One of the true greats, one of the reasons I fell in love with football when I was given Brazil in a sweepstake at school in '86.

Indeed,
The terms `legend or god` are generally overstated but in this case maybe an understatement.

I always thought that it was a big mistake to drop Eratosthenes for that first match.

'82 World Cup was the first that I would say I really remember in detail. Socrates and Eder from the Brazil side really made an impression on me...just been watching some footage of Socrates on the BBC website. When you watch highlights from that era normally looks a bit "village" compared to the modern day but not Socrates.

Agree entirely with this post - Zico and Socrates are the reason I fell in love with football!

The first World Cup I remember was 1986, largely due to this man, I wish it was 1982. His brother was pretty handy as well. RIP.

Sad to see. He's one of the players we used to pretend to be as kids after scoring a good goal, wheeling away shouting 'Socrateeeeeeees'.
