Gatso v's Speed Indicatorthings

I don't know if this has come up before, I'm sure it has but here I go anyway....
Gatso's etc are all very well and in the right place (town centres/outside schools/black spots) are great, but most of the time they're just pointless, and in reality just make drivers slow down to 30ish then speed up again - oh and generate a nice chunk of cash.
Just recently I've driven past a good number of those signs which flash up your speed as you go by. Now to me, they prove a far better deterent. It flashes up 42 Mph, and slow down I will, and not just for 100m, but for a good while as I feel it really sticks in the mind.
My opinion is we should be seeing more of these contraptions around the place.
If these were then used to show where there are places where people consistently drive too fast, speed cameras would be felt to be more appropriate rather than underhand and sneaky.
