The other half has put an ice cream maker on her list, it's something I like the idea of too. Are they any good? I was thinking of a Kenwood one which is about £30 on Amazon, is this the best value for money or are there better versions for similar money? Thanks in advance.

We have this one:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cuisinart-ICE30-ice-cream-...

Seemed highly rated and we're pleased with it. Fantastic ice cream, but rarely makes it ready to eat though, usually put it in the freezer for an hour or two.

Check that the bowl will fit in your freezer — some ice cream makers have quite high bowls that may not fit in freezer drawers or between fixed shelves.

I did see that and thought it must be worth a shout.

The Ben & Jerry book is excellent, apart from it's fascination with cups as measurements. Weights (even for liquids) is so much more accurate.

We have the cuisineart twin bowl which is great for entertaining as you can make two flavours or ice cream and sorbet.

Also (and the reason I bought it for the girlfriend) is her dairy intolerance, we use "the vegan scoop" recipe book using soy cream... about a 3rd of the calories but you wouldn't tell to eat it, tastes delicious yum

The important thing to remember when you use the type with the bowl you have to freeze first is that unless you leave the bowl in the freezer for long enough and/or you don't chill your custard down properly before churning then you won't end up with ice cream, which is very frustrating when you're looking forward to a sneaky spoonful or two before it goes in the freezer.
