On the Jaguar Mk1, what is the rear suspension layout?

Wikipedia thinks its quarter eliptics?

You're both right in a way!

The rear springs are inverted half eliptics, but half their length is inserted inside the rear chassis legs resulting in an arrangement whereby the axle is secured to the end of the spring instead of the centre, and the spring pivots about 2 rubber blocks mounted to the end of the chassis legs.

The idea is to both lower the centre of gravity and reduce suspension travel at the rear. Sideways movement of the axle is controlled by panhard rod attached to a bracket on one of the spring mounts.

Just to add that The MK1 Jag had a very narrow rear track, which made them a real handful , Mike Hawthorn unfortunately / sadly killed himself I'n one whilst racing Rob Walker I'n his 300 SLR MERC . Jaguar widened the rear track for the MK 2 , which much improved the handling .

Is it correct to say they were racing? I'm not sure that was established as a fact?

Since they were on the Queen's highway, they obviously weren't racing.

My Dad found that out the hard way in 1965 when his Mk1 broke away and tank slapped all the way down the road. Fortunately he was able to walk away from it, or I wouldn't be here...

The Mk1 is still one of my all-time favourite Jaguars. An itch I am going to have to scratch one day.

Certainly not established as fact.
The coroner recorded a verdict of accidental death and went on to add there was no "evidence that the action was caused by the action of any other person, certainly not Mr. Walker...."
