Well it certainly felt like it this morning.

Next door neighbour parks his car on the road, in front of my house (no problem there). He started his car at 5:20 this morning then left it running until 5:50 when he presumably went to work. No revving or anything. But the car is directly below by bedroom window so it woke me, my other half, and baby son. We live in a rural location so there is no passing traffic at all until much later in the day.

Reasonable or not?

Totally unreasonable, and not good for the car either.

Can't they just de-ice, wipe windows, then start up and drive away?

Just have a word with him with your concerns.
Also remind him that an opportunist may strike especially if he is leaving it running whilst he is indoors.

30 mins? That seems properly excessive! Have a polite word with him.

I run a bit of a lairy exhaust on the 5 and on cold mornign try and leave it running while clearing th e windows for a s short a time as possible to avoid upsetting the peeps in my close.

Also remind him it's actually illegal to do that...

I'll warm up the car for 5 minutes if need be, but 30 minutes is excessive and pretty inconsiderate really!

Maybe he forgot that he'd left it running? See if he does it again, if so, pop around and have polite word!

Generally speaking, no.

I'll tend to do it for about 5-10 mins if the windscreen is covered in ice. Bit different if the car's particularly loud at idle.

At least he hasn't got a TVR...now that would be antisocial wink

I feel guilty if I go out into town and don't get back till gone 2300...for the last 100 odd yards (rural location) I just creep in on tickover in first.

No, not a loud car. Just a rather tatty Clio with mismatching panels. To be honest, I do the same thing myself but only for a few minutes and only after 6:30.

30 minutes seems a lot but if that's as long as it takes to clear the windows then what can he do?

My exhaust is a bit boomy at idle and in winter I'm really conscious of annoying the neighbours with it so I try and get off as quickly as possible, but I can hardly drive off with a frozen windscreen so it has to sit there for a while.

Were not tempted to jump in his car and drive off with it?

That would teach him!

Scrape it off or use de-icer?

No excuse for this really... I'd definitely be having a word.

Well, I've got a 5:30 start myself tomorrow so maybe I will return the favour.

Erm, this is PH. You NEED to:

a) Go and get into neighbours car and drive it into nearest lake
b) Punch neighbour in face
c) Shout nonsense at neighbours curled up body while it lies on floor
d) Go back inside a knock the wife's back doors off.
e) Have a cup of £150/pound Kopi Luwak weasel sh*t coffee in your mug made of purest unobtanium

Job jobbed.

10 minutes is the max I've ever needed (without de-icer) with fairly thick ice on the windscreen, 30 minutes is taking the piss.

Well I dont see how you can say anything really, if you do it?
Ok he does it at 5am which wakes you up as you dont rise till 6, but you probably wake up a neighbour at 6.30 who doesnt otherwise wake until 8am!!!
The only bit of it I dont get is why does your neighbour park outside your house to do it?
Maybe thats where a nice friendly gentle chat mentioning because you park it under my window in wakes the wife and baby up after a sleepless night, etc etc might be the way forward??

I do, but it's hardly an instant solution. It can still take ten minutes in the sort of winters we've had recently.

What is needed is a Range Rover, either programme it with the time you will be leaving or press a button on the fob a little while before you go and when you get out to the car it will have defrosted itself and warmed itself up ready.

He may not realise how loud his car can be heard from inside your house just smile and have a chat about it. Don't do what my neighbour did and with no prior words just assume I was ahole and started having a go. I was more than happy to avoid dusturbing them, but I had no idea how audible my car was inside their flat while I had it idling to check oil etc.

Complete waste of time. The person warming it up should just drive it off gently.
Very anti-social.
