Opposite of what car: How did I do?
Discussion
The MX-5 I've driven since 2003 has finally met its match. It's been absolutely perfect in that time. It has never gone wrong, it does up to 38mpg, it costs nothing to service, it can fit all our camping gear in it and yet is bloody good fun to drive and will happily lap up a trackday every few months.
However, it has now met it's match. The tiny puppy we picked up in August has rapidly expanded and she is approaching the size where driving with me, the dog and the wife in the car is as silly as it is uncomfortable.
So I was tasked with finding a second car (can't get rid of the roadster of course
). I spent many weeks considering countless makes and models, weighing up their strengths and weaknesses but just couldn't seem to find one car that would fit all the criteria, which was as follows:
- room for two people and a dog
- genuinely useful boot
- wife-friendly to drive
- modern interior (remember I've spent much of the last eight years in 1991
)
- comfortable enough to drive long distances
- no worse than the MX-5 on fuel
- fun
- interesting
I put a lot of time and effort into my car choices but I was really struggling on this one, until I suddenly remembered a car I really liked when they were launched. So as far as I can tell, this was pretty much the only car on the market that fitted the bill, so I bought one at the weekend.
So what do you reckon I went for? Here's a clue:

Note: it's black and white so the colour doesn't give you a clue

depends how much you spent. Alfa GTs are similar money and similar cars (worse handling, better looking, nicer to sit in i'd argue).
I was very tempted by the Alfa GTV. The thing that swung it was the boot space really. Having two cars and no way of taking a box of rubbish to the tip is a bit dumb.sday12 said:
...Now take your mum's car back to the dealer, I'm sure they'll understand.
Ha. Surprisingly I've had more comments like that with this Celica than when I got the MX-5
Dont listen to them, great cars, I ran one for 3 years, was a lovely place to be with the extended leather and handles nicely too, not the most powerful thing, mine was a 140hp version but more than quick enough through the lanes and makes you drive in a nice smooth manner ...
Might pop into classifieds ....
