I'm sending out just bad vibes to the universe or just suffering a lot of bad carma these days. I'm in the US, near Boston.

My daily-driver Dodge Neon R/T recently decided it needed a hole in the #1 piston (first bad carma), so while I've been working on the repair of this car I've been using my '85 280i (with 24K original miles) as my daily driver. The weather hear around Boston has been pretty mild so it's been quite appropriate for the 280i.

Well, now for the second episode of bad carma. I just now had to have the car flat bedded home. It's lower radiator hose opened up on the highway. I ended up driving overheated about 5 miles before I got to a good place to stop. There was a state police barracks and highway maintenance area. I'm beating myself up now for not stopping there. I just wasn't sure of what to do and I passed it, pretty much commiting me to the next exit on the Mass Pike, which is where I was hoping to get to stop.

So, I'm worried about having damaged the engine. I'm running synthetic oil, but that'll only provide so much protection. Really, the first thing to do is to replace the hose and take it from there. How well does that fibre cam gear deal with heat?

Can anyone help with a replacement part number or source for this lower radiator hose? I can take the hose to a local auto parts store and hunt through everything to find a hose, or part of one, that would be proper replacement. I've done it plenty before, and always with very good result. Just takes some time hunting. But, if anyone's already done this and can help with an instant part #/manufacturer/source that would be appreciated.

Oh, and while I'm at it, does anyone have a lead on getting all the hoses for this motor. I've just gotta replace them all. I have been very good at service work like this, but neglected this this time and I'm paying for it now. I'm not worried about the straight-run hoses so much, this stuff I can get anywhere (maybe get just a little fancy with some basic Earls or Aeroquip). It's the molded/shaped hoses for the 2.8i Ford engine I suspect I'm going to have to work a bit to source. This engine has that one funky tapered hose that runs from the water pump to wherever. So, any sources for hoses for the Ford 2.8i motor?

Also, anyone have any good words to say about just how durable and tough this motor is that it's unlikely that I've done any serious damage to an unmolested, original, low-mileage motor. It would sure help frown

Two things...

- When the Neon motor failed, I told myself I'd get AAA (for those outside the US, a popular, helpful membership travel service that can help with the cost of roadside emergencies). Didn't.
- Just last Sunday I was with my brother in the 280i telling him I really need to replace all the hoses in the car. Didn't.

Thanks!

- Steven

Hi Mate..Firstly "Carma" is spelt "Karma" and i dont think its anything to do with it and if it is just do a good deed each day and you will soon lift any bad karma..Think yourself lucky that your not un-luckily lucky like me..Lose a million pound/dollars and find a thousand..You can buy complete hose kits for the 280i that are all standard although not cheap..It might be cheaper to replace all the straight ones with off the shelf hose..The moulded bottom radiator hose is a ford capri 2.8i but i believe the top one is a granada as the radiator is a granada, At least it is in mine..There are some bits on ebay and auto shops should sell various sized silicone hose for the straight bits..I will see if i can find any part numbers or specific places to get the hose..As far as damage to the engine i have heard that colognes suffer from cracked heads is overheated..Hopefully yours isnt..Ziga

Most of the hoses are quite simple, so you could replace them all with standard bends and hose joiners, I did not 400SE like this with silicone, before they did a kit. this is quite a standard modification so don't think it will make the car non-standard as such.

Ha! That "Car"-ma spelling is intentional. I'm well familiar with karma.

Taking the original hoses to a local parts shop and sifting through their hose inventory, I found some excellent replacements. Two for the upper, with a section of a longer hose being excellent. For the lower, I found another excellent replacement, needing an inch or two cut from the water pump side.

Finding Granada or Capri bits in the US is just not an option. On eBay, I've seen Granada 2.8i lower radiator hoses. Curly, long things. May fit, but not what was/is in the 280i.

On joiners and bends, I have done this a number of times. I've done this with my 2500M. Mostly just have to find conventional angles or straight runs. Works great.

Okay. I located hoses that are excellent fits. Outstanding fits for the upper and lower radiator hoses. Dayco parts from AutoZone. The lower hose (Dayco C70687) needs shortened a bit and the upper (Dayco E71918) is a section from a longer hose. I'm looking for a perfect replacement for the by-pass hose off the water pump. Stock, this hose needs a short angled bend on one end with approx.
3/4" ID on the pump end, and at the other end, after a run of about 17", a 1/2" ID. I got one with 3/4" IDs and this is just to large for the splice end.

Oh, and report on the engine's running. Runs great. I changed the oil and filter, too, before starting the engine again. Starts right up. Water temp is perfect. I've got another 1/3 bar more oil pressure. ?? It's running at about 3.0 bars when warmed up. Maybe just the result of a fresh filter and oil? I recall the engine oil pressure tyipcally running at just over 2.5 bars.

Thanks, everyone, for the help.

More on my cooling system saga...

Everything was going well enough - the engine really is in need of a valve
adjustment; it's showing the tell-tale signs - when driving around the water
temperature gauge needle started creeping upward again! Danged, and double
danged! What the...!

Getting home without having the needle go into the red this time (and I'm hoping
there's not a scenario where the engine was in fact melting down without the
gauge showing deadly levels of heat), the upper heater core hose, the hose going
over the top of then engine under the inlet plenum, was leaking. Over the years
it had taken a permanent bend. Lifting the hose and straightening the bend,
cracks opened up and water sprayed out. Oh, my.

So, I dumped the cooling system again via the heater hose take off from the
water pump at this splice to the hose and began removing the hose. It was HARD
and BRITTLE. Cracked, falling apart. Even the nylon reinforcing fibers were
weak.

This hose type/material, at least in my car, in three places - this hose running
over the top of the engine, running to/from the lower fitting on the
expansion/overflow bottle, and to the driver's side (LHD) heater core. All
brittle. I replaced the hose lengths running over the top of the engine and at
the bottom of the overflow tank. The hose running to the heater core is several
feet long, passes through the firewall, sealed with some goop. I didn't tackle
this one, though this is the hose that, along with the ballooning upper and
lower radiator hoses, told me I really had to do something about the hose soon.
This hose, where it makes the bend through the firewall to enter the passenger
compartment I saw was cracking. Though not only cracking, it was showing
evaporated coolant in the cracks.

All this hosing is standard, easy and cheap to source 5/8" ID.

ALSO, the waterpump heater core take off hose is 3/4" on the water pump side and
5/8" on the other side where it splices to the hose that runs across the top of
the motor. It needs a very short right angle bend exiting the waterpump, but
this is readily available and just needs easy trim up and fits perfectly. So,
not special part needed here.

I gotta complete the total hose replacement, but I think (I HOPE) okay for right
now.

Sounds like you got away with it. I had a similar poblem when the bottom elbow sheared off the radiator on the 350i. Luckily I noticed the needle juming up straight straight away and pulled over. Withe some liquid metal and a couple of jubilee clips I fixed it by the side of the road. But where to fill up with water? I located a nearby stream and used my spare gallon can in the boot. When my boss complained I was half an hour late for work I just gave him a hard stare....
