S.A.D? Are the cold, dark nights an issue?

Could also be the fact that as you get older your priorities change, and may well embrace them.

I for one, still can not under stand how I used train 6 times a week from the age of 17 to 23, and still go clubbing/socialising.

These days the 3 times a week suits, and if I dont..."meh".

Embrace and relax. Also find something new to do; tennis etc.

Sounds like a bit more than that, OP.

Apathy is one of the major signs of depression, as I'm sure you've Googled it. Depression comes in a load of forms, and it sounds like you are just having a bit of a low period, which is understandable; it happens to most people from time to time.

The best way of digging yourself out is to force yourself to do things, even though you don't really want to. You'll feel much better if you are doing things. I'm sure there's something you can think of that you've always wanted to do, now would be a good time to do it. Take up a musical instrument maybe, find a new hobby, something that's a bit more productive than sitting on the sofa. Even going for a walk might help.

Hi Scooter, what's interesting is your belief that you will be judged as being something other then a 'tough guy' if you talk about how you are feeling. Maybe you can talk to your partner about your post on here. You might find that you have the support you need at home.

But.....sitting on the sofa, doing fook all (well xbox), just feels right.

Getting your running slacks on and dragging your arris out in the freezing, dark, rainy $hitness is bloody hard work.

I found that having kids, although wonderful, totally ruined my exercise regime. If you work all day, come back at 5-6pm, it's dark, cold, raining, kids need feeding, bath, bed. By the time that's all done then fook that. G&T, Xbox, bed.

I maybe get out running once or twice a week and the odd session at the thai boxing gym.

It's called life mate, it's a bit crap sometimes.

Arrange to train with a mate, it's easier to let yourself down than someone else, and remember how you feel after training, I can't ever remember getting back from a cycle / run and thinking I wish I hadn't done that, but many times I have thought I can't be bothered before I start.

Any form of exercise will help lift your mood so try and keep doing it. I'm not much help other than that.

Sounds obvious but exercise well, every day. Eat well, keep down sugar and salt. Get good sleep if possible. Alcohol is a depressant.

Maybe get your family involved would be an incentive. Take them to a local swimming pool or tennis centre and get your kid to take up tennis. It gives everyone something to do rather than getting camped in the house every night watching drivel over a 'couple' glasses of wine - over days, months and years excess calories is going to add up.

From what you've said, part of it makes me think "getting old, it's just the way it is" however it certainly is sounding like depression but more a light rain than a raging storm. The crap weather might have something to do with it plus the on-going news about economic problems, people losing their jobs, cuts etc. Even if you're in a safe job, you will soak it up and have a tendency to feel down.

So, try to find a new hobby or sport that interests you, force yourself to do a bit of exercise (it releases natural happy hormones), take time out to "count your blessings", browse sickipedia, sort out your food intake, drink more water, drink less alcohol, have a laugh with your friends and family, play with your child (release your inner child!)... I don't really think you need to get happy pills from the doc just yet unless you're much worse than you describe and are holding back on details.

If you think you may be depressed, check out the symptoms here http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Depression/Pages/Symp...

If your score is high, go to the quack and discuss options - not all treatments involve drugs.

I used to be a rugby playing skier and as I got older and had to give it all up because of injuries. In fact, I stopped doing sport altogether because I couldn't find anything that gave me the same thrill. Big mistake.

Years later I discovered argentine tango (yes, really!). It's quite mentally demanding and involves lots of low impact exercise. Best of all you work up a good sweat whilst a woman rubs her top bks all over your chest. Some of the women who do it are drop dead gorgeous and you can do it with your wife in the same room, looking on approvingly. What's not to like?

I've been a like a butcher's dog ever since I started - haven't been so fit and glossy for years...

Scooter - assuming your mojo suddenly returned, what would you ideally be doing on weekday evenings?
