I've never gotten the whole obsession with this.

Ok, admittedly I'm Scottish, but even at that - why can't people just buy their own drinks - as many or as little as they want?

What sort of conversation would be had if everybody was individually going to the bar all the time? How would that work?

Quite apart from that, it would just be st constantly having to get up and go to the bar, order - a nightmare in itself at times - then return.

It shouldn't really be anything to do with being tight - after all, if I buy a round of 8 drinks once on a night out where I have 8 drinks, it works out virtually even. Not withstanding differences in prices between drink, which in most cases is negligible in the grand scheme of things.

as a casual drinker i wonder this too

though i'd love to know whats the best way goin about when one of the group begins to order the more expensive drinks on others ppl turn as opposed to his usual stuff.

They do this in Norway (where admittedly drinks are frighteningly expensive) and it anoys the hell out of me.
Much prefer the more relaxed arrangement of taking turns.

Getting one big round in, then having drinks brought directly to your hand for the next 10 rounds is a good thing.

It doesn't really happen, generally. You won't find many people in a given circle of friends who deliberately move to (much) more expensive drink when it's not their turn, as they wouldn't be part of the circle of friends for long.

Differences between pints, shorts, a few cocktails - all would be absorbed by most people without complaint, it's swings and round abouts.

Unless one is so tight one squeaks when one walks, of course.

It's completely unworkable.
....agreed, I can't see it working any other way, and there would be about 5x the people at the bar, and it would take much longer.

yep this how we used to do it...

changed to the its my night i set up the tab and then we use that for the night... admittedly we only do it when there are 3 of us and its the same three that take turns.

Any larger and we revert back to rounds.

Average nights tab is circa £40-50 but then you have 2 nights out not buying

So on his round you all order what he did and then tell him to stop taking the piss. He looks a knob, realises his mistake and hopefully stops doing it.

Have you been drinking already?

I suppose the logistical aspect does make sense.

This^^^ Though I generally fk this up - the more I drink the faster I drink (and I don't go out boozing too often any more!!) - must be the excitement.

Anyway when it gets to a point when I am waiting so start my own round in between, which in turn leads to my round being out of synch! I think this might account for the £150+ nights out!

Big rounds are ace - but there is always one who will say oh no I will get my own!! He infuriates me in a completely unreasonable manner that I cannot explain!

Depends on size of group and what sort of night it is.
I have on occasion made it clear that I am only having a couple of drinks so there is no point in being added to a round if there is a group.
If there is between 2 and 6 it makes good sense to get rounds in if you are all together for the night just as a logistical thing.

I don't drink so I always end up paying over the odds for a round. But what the hell. Life's too short. For the 5-a-side group we used to all chuck in £10 and when it's gone, it's gone. Psychologically I find the kitting thing better but is horses for courses.

What I find more of a problem is the odd couple/individual at a dinner party who order the most expensive meal/bottles of wine for their end of the table and then expect to split the bill equally. Gets right on my tits.

Has everyone got one (or two.. they some time congregate in pairs.. like testicles) mate that is crap when it comes to 'rounds'?!

After 15 years it got beyond a joke. Whenever we went to the pub he always 'forgot is wallet (coin purse)' Yet always demanded a Stella / double... something at the top end of the bar bill.

Or another s trick he used to play: miraculously needing to use his phone whenever entering the pub in order to miss out on the awkwardness of 'Whos getting the first round in then?'

I wouldnt mind - but he was the cu'stard with all the money!!

I hate being organised about it, but assuming there's only 4 people or so I'll buy a round anyway because I like my friends. Once it starts getting over that many people it's a) a lot of money, and b) I'll probably be passed out in a gutter before I get that number of drinks back.

This with bells and whistles on. It's ignorant.

!!
I think there is a rule somewhere that says a group of blokes numbering 8 or higher MUST have one of the number who suddenly needs the loo when it's his round etc...

I've always just done rounds, except when I'm with certain people where I just buy every other round.

or the ones in a round of 5/6 and at the end of round just before theirs state they have had enough and need to go home.

one mate did that several times and then got all shirty when we said fine but get our drinks in first otherwise you leave the pub headfirst.

never tried that trick again.

I think you might be right there.

'getting a round in' is one of the basic rules of being a man isnt it?! I enjoy getting my mates a drink, especially when I'm feeling flush - but 'Mr Coin Purse' annoys me like a bad tooth!
