Rolling 30 year No road tax epetition
Discussion
Hi everyone,i thought i would re ignite this epetition thing as the 30 year rolling road tax free for classics has only just pipped the 12000 mark, come on there must be thousands more on pistonheads and in car clubs across the country who hang their tongues out when they see an old Aston,Ferrari,TVR,Lotus,MG,Ford,V8's or what ever throbbing past,God only knows how many of us had super cars etc stuck on the bedroom wall or played on the living room floor with them old toy cars thinking one day i'll have one,now they are getting few and far between all those characterless euro boxes littering our streets.
The classics need some help to pep up those little lads ears next time they are out and about so spend a couple of minutes and get your names down on the petition.
Its at http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/183
For those who think it doesnt apply because you have a newer piece of horse power, think in 30 years when you are 50 odd they would be classics and you'd love to see them on the roads to show your little kids what you used to drive even if its running on lpg or petrol at £30.00 a gallon!
If you are going waste time and more effort knocking this in to touch because you think nothing ever happens, dont bother, just waste your time signing it.
Nothing ever happens if you dont bother but something may happen if you do,
Take a minute to look at the other motoring related epetitions, perhaps we can all stick one up em,Polititions that is!

If I have 11 cars, then I expect to pay road tax on them all - doesn't matter what age they are. The fact that I have 11 should make it clear that I drive each of them for a much lower amount of miles than if I only had one, yet I am required to pay for road tax for each. Why should someone who's collected the same number of possibly valuable, possibly not, classic cars have 'free' road tax.
The only sensible way to collect road tax would be to put an extra (although it's high enough already, but that's another argument) 'tax' on fuel. That way you pay more tax for doing higher mileage, be it in 1 car or 11.
It would also mean a reduction in 'untaxed' cars on the road - unless you steal the fuel too.

Yes, as has been said on the other threads on this subject, the chance of any gain at all is nil, the chance of losing some or all of what we've already got is high.I hope to god the newspapers don't get hold of this.
Now really is not the time.
Two responses, one takes the moral highground the other responds with ' I hope the press don't get hold of this ' !
It's too late, its already been in the press that's why its been in the news and that's how there is a petition to get it debated in parliament.
I run 3 vehicles,2 because I need too the other because its my enjoyment,I am the only insured driver for all 3,therefore I can only drive one at a time ,the other two remain off road,so why is it right that I pay full road tax on one that gets used once in a blue moon literally, because its older than most other cars on the road it will always need fettling and the less its used the more fettling it needs which adds more expense thus condoning it to more life off the road,if I pay full road tax without getting the use I'm subsidising the rest of the car taxes for people like yourselves. If one is in such a privileged position to be able to afford to run, tax, insure and maintain 11 cars then they are not really on the same planet as the majority of tax payers are they? It's a daft comparison anyway as we are debating a handfull of classic cars not majority euro boxes.
If it was right for there to be a rolling exemption 36 years or so ago why not now?

Problem solved - simply tax it when you use it, and claim the refund when you put in back on SORN each time.
I don't have 11 cars, I have 1. However, as it's 1 week newer than my previous car (same engine, better emissions/mpg, but different model/shape) I now pay almost double the road tax due to an arbitrary choice of cut-off dates for retrospective taxation.
How much is the tax for your 'classic' car - £130 or £215 (or about half of that if you only use it for 6 months a year)? Either way it's not the £460 that I pay.

£215 for each of the three, but the 1988 cars not getting taxed as it not getting abused on the road, now if it was tax free in another 7 years that would be a different story,it could go out on sunny days even in the winter. Don't forget only one gets used at a time for me so really I'm paying the same as you except you've got more luxury and gizmos I suspect.

BTW its VED. The roads are paid by ones council tax
I know it's now called 'Vehicle Excise Duty' but everyone knows it as 'road tax' - so that's what I'm calling it, in a manner no different to my 'Dyson DC35 Animal Pearl & Dean Edition with pet attachments' being called 'the hoover'.Local roads are (supposed to be) maintained by your local council from it's budget (resident & government), but national road infrastructure projects(trunk roads, motorways, bridges, etc.) are paid for centrally, from the funds collected through all our taxes (VED, income, fuel).
In theory one could argue that everyone's tax burden should be calculated individually so that those that don't use council facilities should receive a reduction - but this won't happen as it would cost so more to administer that taxes would have to rise for everyone to pay for these reassessments, and would wipe out any notional reductions.
As I said earlier, the only sensible way would be to tax people on car usage via fuel tax - so if you have 1 car and do 10,000 miles a year you would be taxed the same as someone with 5 cars doing 2000 miles in each (assuming similar fuel economy figures of course).

Put the "road tax" on the fuel price, that's the simplest way, and replace the tax disc with proof of insurance. Two birds, one stone!
