Now, be gentle with me, I don't venture onto there parts very often.

I remember as a kid having a poster of 959 and an F40 on the bedroom wall, as many kids, and I seem to rememeber a stat about a (stationary) 959 being able to be catch up with and pass a car travelling at 100 mph in less than a quarter of a mile... did I imagine this?

My logic may be flawed but :

Car travelling at 100mph, covers a mile in 36 seconds.

1/4 mile = 9 seconds.

Pretty sure the 959 takes longer than 9 seconds ( maybe 11-12? ) to do a 1/4 mile so car in question would complete the 1/4 mile before the 959.

The 959 would catch up pretty soon after though if it continued to accelerate.

Not quite.

A quick google reveals the 959 to have the capability to devour a standing quarter mile in 12 seconds dead. That gives an average speed of 75mph.

Still pretty impressive though!

For comparison, I believe the Veyron has posted a 10.9 (F1 = 11.1)

A Top Fuel dragster, if passed by a car moving at 200Mph, whilst staged, would catch and overtake the car before the end of the 1/4... That may be part of the fact you recall..

Ok, if I understand right the saying is:

A car doing 100mph passes a 959, and continues at that speed.

The 959 then takes off at the exact point when the car doing 100mph passes it.

The 959 catches up with and overtakes the car doing a constant 100mph within 1/4 mile.

The answer is: NOT POSSIBLE.

A constant 100mph is 44.7 metres per second. A quater mile is 402 metres. The car doing 100mph constant speed would cover 1/4 mile in 8.99s. A 959 would be at best in the late 11s qtr mile bracket, maybe even dead or very early 12s. I found 11.8s and 12s 1/4 mile times online.

If you changed it from 1/4 mile to 1/2 mile, that would take the car doing 100mph around 17.99s to complete, I found online a figure of 18.8s @ 141mph for the 959.

If you changed it from 1/4 mile to 1 mile, that would take the car doing 100mph around 35.97s to complete, I found online a figure of 30.8s @ 162mph for the 959, so it may have been 1 mile?

Was this romour not also rolled out for the Veyron? (can't remember which car it was supposed to have 'trumped' though)

Veyron is in the 10s, although the Veyron Supersport achieved a 9.9s 1/4 mile @ 146mph. Fairly nippy.

It's the Mclaren F1.

If you line them up both side by side. Mclaren takes off, by the time the Mclaren gets to 100mph start the Bugatti off, the Veyron gets to 200mph first. I think it's fairly close, as in maybe the Mclaren would just get to 200mph in under half a second quicker, according to car and drivers numbers (proved after testing the veyron). If you use the new Veyron Superspot though, then it's definately accurate and then some.

I remember reading a similar thing, I think it might have come from fast lane magazine??

I thought it was a time that it would cath it rather than a distance? But I could be wrong.
Definatly remember the "If a car passes it doing a 100mph then it'll catch it 'x' " though

But in 1989 there wasn't much that could do it!!!

One of the Porsche Experience driving instructors told me that, in the distance a Cayman takes to do 0 to 130 to 0, a 997 Turbo S can do 0 to 130 to 0 to 130 to 0.

The F1 is faster to 200mph that the Veyron as independently tested at Bruntingthorpe, as is my car smile. I am sure the Veyron SS will be quicker still.

Yes I have seen that. This is the issue, for example Brunters is a very slow track and not great for traction. Lots of factors, but generally we use the Brunter times because so many cars are tested there in the UK. Would love to do Papenberg because I could post a quicker time but not that feasible.

That is one hell of a stat if it's true! smile
I can't quite imagine it in my head though- I know the 997tt is exceptionally quick, but 130 mph is going some. And I think I'd throw up if I were a passenger!
Please, someone prove it with some numbers (or a Youtube vid)!

This was from Top Gear (with Chris Goffey). It was either half a mile or a mile.

I remember that exact fact also!

Sad, innit?

I was 19 at the time and amazed by the fact, half a mile springs to mind. I wished my MG Metro at the time would have done it
