I used to commute through those on foot to get to college. The things you do for an education.

Saw some odd things, but in a year of commutes (some days drove, so not evey day walked) from Whalley Range no problems whatsoever. To clarify, I was/am not in the parlance of PH "powerfully built with a goatee" either, nor heavily armed!

hmm, the guy's idea of decay is that everything, brick walls included, seem to develop long pointy shards.

Me too occasionally back in the 70's. Had a couple of mates who had a flat there too.

Some of my mates lived in a squat for a while. A lot of the flats were vacant as they tried to decomission them and so many were either squats or were ransacked for the copper pipe etc. and gutted.

I remember the shop there used to be near the road over the parkway. The shelves were old scaffolding planks and the had literally just one tin of each basic type, beans, soup, peas etc. so minimise shoplifting.

I used to live in Moss Side, things were reasonably grim in the 70's but the drug and gang problems weren't as bad as they are now. I lived in Whitworth Park Mansions on Moss Lane East, not far from the Harp Lager brewery. Prossy operating from a room over the corner shop opposite. Sounds posh but it wasn't (the address, not the prossy), loads of flats in a rundown Georgian house which was once owned by either Rolls or Royce.

That was the posh bit of Moss Side. biggrin

The gangs were much more prevalent when we were there - a number of shootings but I honestly never saw anything other than the odd gangs of young guys in flash cars (even a Sierra Costworth, this being 1990), although it was a bit close to home when someone was machetted to death in the road behind us.

We used to walk up Greenheys Lane and then up to Bonsall Street. Seldom used the pedestrian bridge over Princess Road because that would have been pushing it!
