Hi All,

I'm thinking of treating myself to an AMG Mercedes next year.....question is which one.

I need 4 seats and I'm thinking:

CLK63
CLK55
CLS55

I have a budget of between £15-£20k.......so which one should I consider???

Also which AMG have the supercharger?

Is the CLK55 inferior to the clk63??

Help

I have driven the cls55 and it was sublime. Except there seems to loads of cls's everywhere I look.

Also as the clk is smaller, I guess it will be more nimble?

OP, of the three cars you listed, only the CLS is supercharged.

Is there are major performance difference?

I guess the clk63 will be similar to cls55...but how does the clk55 compare?

You need to drive them. Nothing wrong with a CLK55, but the other two are a significant step up.

CLS has 4 doors, much nicer interior, and in fact is rarer than the CLK.

Also, CLS is a class above, larger and much more distinctive than the CLK.

CLS also Airmatic suspension, which is pretty good.

Drive both and see what you think.

I bought a 2007 CLK63 cabrio a month or so ago and it's absolutely incredible, and a genuine four seater providing you're not too tall.

I initially looked at a coupe beforehand but being able to have the roof down and hear the engine is fantastic - it can make you drive like a bit of nob though!

Not really thought about the c-class. Mrs ice has a 2006 c200 cdi auto avantgarde estate, which I think is lovely for what it is.

I want something that looks special/sexy....and has the OMG factor when u drop the hammer.

I recently sold my ML to a dealer in knightsbridge called decca motors international they had a clk55 convertable mega spec low miles limted edition, i was very tempted it was great to drive(had a spin) the guy i spoke to was nevil ( very helpful) it was i think around £19000 on 06. cls too common, clk still looks like a fun car with plenty of grunt and wow factor

For a 15k-20k budget there are three cars you would want to look at and test drive:

CLS 55 AMG
E 55 AMG
CLK 55 AMG

The cls and e class have both got 500 bhp (cls is quoted at 476 but is around 500) and both have torque of 516 lb/ft.

The acceleration is just awesome particularly in the 40-70 range, the noise is brilliant, they come with all the toys you would want and both are currently a massive used car bargain.

The original cls in my opinion one of the best looking cars mercedes have made in the last 15 years, has aged fantastically due to it it's sleek and streamlined 'four door saloon' shape. It's a car that up close looks very nice, but to be truly appreciated must be seen on the move, elegant and refined but still a big enough road presence due to it's size (based on the e class).

The cls start at around 17k, you can get a good cls for 18k-19k, the E55 is quite a bit cheaper with the 2003 cars starting at around 12k so actually under budget which would allow you to put more aside for running the car. Also a great looking car, as much as I love the cls it's not to everyone's taste so if you don't like the styling, then the E55 gives you the same near super car performance in a more traditional saloon package.

The cls 55 amg is not that common at all- it was only manufactured between 2005-2006 and there are just 463 UK imported right hand drive cars. The cls 63 amg arrived in 2006/2007.

The clk 55 amg starts at round 11k, you have the option of a convertible for around 15k, it is a smaller car and so a bit easier to park (well, for me it was anyway), doesn't offer the same straight line speed but is a lovely looking car that got plenty of positive attention, is more than fast enough at 367 bhp and 376 torque. It is still a heavy car at 2 tonnes+. It's in fact only 200kg lighter than the cls, although it does feel a much lighter car when driving in my opinion. It does look a bit more like a sports car than the other two if looks are one of your prime concerns.

Test drive all three and let us know what you think...

BTW- if you can up your budget just a little a Porsche 996 turbo would be something you should consider as well, as would a BMW M6.

out of the three options, I would say the clk55 is not an option!

of the two remaining, performance will be similar, cls looks better but is a lot bigger than the clk.,

For me the clk63 wins just for the glorious noise of the 6.2 V8 engine cloud9

Great pic SFO, mine is boring black but that's the only boring thing about itsmile

From the e55, clk55 and cls55 I would definitely go for the cls if the budget is only 20k as it's much faster than the clk and looks a lot better and more modern than the e55 which as nice as it is, is showing it's age a bit now.

With 20k the clk63 is close to 10k out of budget for a good one- this would change of course depending on how long your prepared to wait, or if you can up the budget a bit.

I drove quite a few amg's before buying my current car, including a c63, cl63 and cls 63 the first two of which cost twice what I paid for my cls- for me it was the best price-performance combination and in many of the other cars as nice as they are it's a case of diminishing returns. You pay a lot more, without getting superior performance in day to day driving, being better equipped or having a significant edge looks wise (in my opinion).

I would probably only consider changing my cls next spring/summer for something completely different like a Ferrari 360 or a Maserati granturismo- and that's only because I think they are two of the most beautiful cars ever made!

Why not consider a C43? Plenty of cheap ones around, but then you need to find one without the dreaded metal cancer. You can also upgrade to a 55 engine if you need extra and smooth power delivery. Also, it hides easily what it has under the bonnet, so very discreet indeed.

I have been having a similar dilema to yourself.

Been mainly looking at the E55 and C55's.

The C55 is looking the most likely due to the running costs.

Am really tempted by a E60 M5 as well but everyone says you need a warranty and need to service it at the dealer (for the warranty) which I dont really want as I use my mate who has his own workshop.
