Well strictly speaking it's probably not stealing.

We had our grit box delivered last week. We live on a hill that is not deemed a main road so doesn't get treated by the council in the winter months, therefore the grit box is quite handy given the last 2 winters.

The problem we have is people who live on stretches of road that do get gritted keep taking the contents so that there is very little left when we need it frown

This evening a bloke turned up in a fiesta packed with buckets and literally filled his car with grit, the thing is if you need it you get given you own box.

Even worse, last year it was robbed by gypos (so I heard).

The question I'm asking is should randoms (to us) nick our grit if they don't need it as much as us?

Generally speaking, grit boxes are for the use of council staff and designated people only - they're not for "local people" or, indeed, anyone else.

Take pics of people nicking it and report them - it's theft just as if they'd climbed the fence at the council depot to nick it...

It was in our local news last year that the grit bins were for local people to grit the roads the council could not (or didn't have the man power to) get to and anyone caught loading cars with it would be prosecuted.

laugh

Im sure if the council new there was a remote chance they could get sued due to a lack of grit they'd do something pretty sharpish?!

I was going to say, have a word with the people in your road about fitting a new padlock then only certain people can access the grit.
Big problem when it needs replenished hehe

Caught our neighbour barrowing some round to his back garden the other day. Selfish world we live in as the grit is for the steep hill it sits adjacent to.

Count yourself lucky you've got a gritbox!

Leeds Council won't give us one.. Our Cul De Sac is on a steep hill and I live right at the top of it.

Their reasoning- there's no schools, shops or other amenities on the hill. Never mind us actually being able to get out to schools, shops etc etc

Well said.
It must be annoying if you live on a hill and the box is always empty, but it really is for everyone.
I live on a flat side road that doesn't get treated. I live on a bend in the road that is lethal in the snow and i fear sooner or later someone will take it too fast, hit the ice and end up in my driveway. So when it snows i clear the corner and travel a couple hundred yards in my car with a couple of buckets to find grit. Job Done.
To be honest, most times i find the grit bins are full as most other people are lazy sods. If everyone did their bit !!

It strikes me as being rather like when people were panic buying petrol when the refineries were blocked so we ran out in two days, despite the stations having enough stock for two weeks at normal demand. hehe

Can't remember the last time I saw a gritbox in the west end of Edinburgh.

The bins are normally located where there is a need, ie. on a slope/incline.
Alot of the people who nick the grit use it on their driveway.
Clear it with a shovel you fat lazy gits!
We had one guy turn up with a trailer in our village last year ironically towed by 4x4.
Its Lincolnshire FFS, surely if you have a 4x4 there can't be any road or driveway steep enough to warrant putting down grit.

Theft of grit is a real problem. It costs councils a fortune. You are not supposed to just turn up and help yourself (or more likely bag it up and sell it on) as soon as it's filled up. You are supposed to use it WHEN REQUIRED IN AN EMERGENCY IN THE STREET IN THE VICINITY. It is not a personal supply for householders to use on their properties/drives. This is the main reason councils have stopped supplying and filling grit bins. The police warned people last year not to take it or they would be prosecuted. Yes photo them and pass to police and council.

Not true, our local council drop off a palate of grit for a local close, thats on a hill , to grit their own roads. By the locals doing it saves the council a lot of money.
In fact last year the Close near us organised themselves and cleared the road of snow and ice by all getting together and then gritted the road.
But if non locals are bagging up grit for themselves that is not on really.

where the mother in law lives the old codger opposite her emptied the bin last year when it was bad weather, layered it about an inch deep on his drive. emptied the bin completely, and then never moved his car for the entire duration of the bad weather. complete bell end

Whilst I don't disagree with your point regarding the grit doogz, I doubt this is the most pathetic thing you have ever read on PH based on some of the threads we have both posted on it the past.

That's the real problem here. Unfortunately there are no laws against being a completely inconsiderate bd. If there were they would probably have to lock up 50% of the population...
