Thinking about upgading Chimaera 400 exhaust to a sports. Does anything have to be done tuning wise or is it just a straight replacement? Will it still pass its MOT with a sports exhaust? Anybody suggest best place to get these? Anybody done this and regretted it?

I just took all the "wadding" in the silencer out, and welded it shut again, same effect and only cost £100

Been covered quite a lot. Try using the search function. Had it done to mine and it's fantastic, if a little loud (the GF can hear me coming home 5 mins before I arrive). I posted a video a while ago called 'smaug.avi'. It's on here somewhere. Use some decent headphones or have a sub-woofer plugged in when you play it...

Passed the MOT with no problems. There's no noise test component to it, so it's not an issue.

Do it, the noise is worth it unless you plan to do lots of trackdays, in which case get the sports exhaust anyway and a couple of those bolt on silencers that go on the end of the pipes (from somewhere like ACT i think).

My g/f can hear me coming from about 3/4 of a mile away too - says she doesn't often hear a V8 but when she does she knows if its mine or not!

And it doesn't come in to MOT in the slightest!

Hi John

I know the feeling: driving in convoy with the D&C clan and you can't even hear your own car!

If you like track days then it's not the best idea as you'll need extra silencers. Peninsula will do it for you I'm sure.

This was one of the first things I considered doing when I bought my Griff 500 about 15 months ago and after dithering for a while thought I'd just go ahead and get it done. Took the car to Fernhursts who removed all the stuff from the silencer and put straight pipes through instead. Or at least that's what i think they did, I could be wrong?

Anyway I have to say that i don't regret it at all and the sound is fantastic! Made me laugh reading comments about people hearing you coming from some distance away, my missus says exactly the same! In fact I've even set off car alarms with it!

If you want to hear what it sounds like as well this is a link to a video of Vmax IV at Bruntingthorpe this year which amongst others, has a couple of clips of me in the Griff giving it some away from the line!

I see you are in Plympton, if you do go for it and want to go on the track I've got a set of drop in silencers you can use. I'm over in Chaddlewood. No worries.

Hi John, Next time you’re at a D&C meet have a listen to mine, I had the baffles taken out and the sound is fantastic. And now that I've had the engine upgraded it sounds even better, (so I'm told... I will find out when get the car back)

Is this something best done by a TVR garage or is cash in the back pocket of a knowledgable TVR'r a perfectly feasible option. ??

Most TVR Garages should be able to do this. As I said fernhursts did mine as I live in the south and the likes of Dave Batty & Austec all do it as well. A relatively simple procedure if you know what you're doing and I'm sure there's lots of info on here as to exactly how it's done.

John,

Did you get the sports exhaust, or just the mod?
