Spotted: 2008 Lexus ISF

When it comes to fast saloons is this a viable alternative to the Germans...and the Brits?

If large-capacity, sports saloons with eight- or ten-cylinder engines are your bag, but the usual German offerings aren't doing it for you, there is an alternative. The Japanese, for instance, can do the thunderous saloon thing, too... as well as the swingeing depreciation that often comes with such cars.

But big depreciation means there's value to be had in the used market. Take this Lexus ISF. It looks well in silver, is brimming with toys, shows a full dealer history, and the boast of 26mpg seems plausible according to other ISF owners, provided you're in Driving Miss Daisy mode. There really isn't much not to like. Especially for less than £24k.

Interestingly, searching for three-year-old ISFs presented a few candidates both from our classifieds and elsewhere, but demand would appear to be high for the rapid Japanese monster, as all but one of the cars we looked at is already either sold outright or sold subject to finance.

Of course, the Lexus is a few ponies short of some of its rivals, but still they're properly rapid machines and the signs are that they may be less likely to present you with a cringe-worthy bill once the miles begin to pile up. But despite this, does it have the same kind of appeal as the cars from Ingolstadt, Munich, and Stuttgart?

If your answer to that is 'no' then you may be surprised to learn that, on the used market, if you can afford the Lexus then you can probably afford one of the brutish Germans too. What's more, you wouldn't have to make any major compromises in terms of age or mileage.

As a matter of fact, this Audi S6 not only has a tad more snort than the ISF, it's covered fewer miles and would require you to part with just a grand more to get your name on the V5. It's impossible to discuss powerful four-doors without covering the BMW M5, and we're not far off seeing well-used early E60s changing hands for around £10,000, but for the purpose of comparison with the Lexus we're looking at something like this M5 from our classifieds. It's just one year older and costs a grand more, but it looks pretty mean in black and of course you get that M button...

You'll need to pay a little more still for a Mercedes Benz E63 AMG, but at £25,995 this one is still within reach if you prefer a thumping V8 to the M5's screaming V10, and it's only showing 33,000 main-dealer-serviced miles. Speaking of thumping V8s, if you could stretch the budget a bit further still you could even get into an early 2009 Jaguar XFR like this, up for £29k. The mileage is a bit high at 45,000, but then again so is the power at 510hp.

For half the price of the Jag, you could get into this Vauxhall VXR8. Yes, there's a lot less badge than you get with the Germans, the Lexus, and the Jag, but just £15,980 could put you in this 2008 Wortec-supercharged beasty. The noise alone is surely almost worth that!

I'd have the black E60 M5 or silver E63 AMG - more pedigree and power, and probably better cars to drive.

I don't understand the comparison the only comparison is this

http://pistonheads.com/sales/3419041.htm

This

http://pistonheads.com/sales/3162426.htm

or this

http://pistonheads.com/sales/3097338.htm

This is where they aimed the car.. similar power engine size..dimensions..it wasn't aimed at the s6, M5 or E class.

I thought the IS was smaller than an M5? More of a C-class / 3 series rival? It was certainly group-tested as such when new.

that would put its horsepower more on equal terms...

Yep, or the C63. Totally different class to the car's mentioned above IMO.

erm, it seems you've put the IS-F against the wrong german rivals....it's meant for the M3/RS4(well, RS5 now) and the C63.

As above... the IS is a 3-series sized car, so the comparisons in the article make no sense.

ISF v M3 v C63 AMG v RS4 v VXR8 would have been a more interesting read.

IS-F's are well tasty, and likely to be more reliable than the German alternatives. Have to say though, I think my heart would have me buying the RS4 at that money.

That VXR8 isn't supercharged. It has a Wortec cat-back and some lowering springs.

I currently have a baby 3 litre Lexus which has proved to be 100% bullet proof. Not even 1p spent on items going wrong. My next car would be an ISF when funds allow. I care little about which German rivals may be a tad more fun etc. Reliability is my main concern and I'd wager nothing will come close.

Frimley I agree - lazy ad from that dealer. Maybe he doesn't want to sell it as the write up is pish poor as well. However the car itself is interesting. I do find myself drawn to these kind of buses...

Quite like the Lexus, for its rarity. But those quad stacked exhausts are just crass. And I've got a feeling it has a fair way to drop in value yet...

Would probably go for an estate of course, which rules it out. RS4 or C63 for me... Probably the former, given the C63's thirst and the fact that I reckon decent RS4s will become sought after.

Not that the RS4 is exactly frugal of course!

IS-F is full of so much win, although I still hate the tacky exhausts.

C63 and ISF both have a massive flaw...and that is there's no manual gearbox option. The newest C63 may have a double clutch type thing which is better...but a slush box? In cars like these?? Nah thanks. RS4 and M3 all the way.

The ISF is a rather odd-looking thing at the best of times.....but those wheels - ugh! They look as if they have 100,000 miles worth of brake dust caked on them.

RS4 Avant or C63 Estate for me, please.

Got to agree with whats been said above, the ISF is an M3/C63/RS4 rival.

I do like the ISF but IMO its a bit too much of a muscle car and not enough of the precision you see in other Japanese performance cars.

I really like the normal Lexus IS range, if I'm ever fortunate enough to be in the market for a car like that, it will be very high up on the list.
