Golf TDi engine noise on shutdown
Discussion
Hi all,
I have recently noticed a 'whining' noise coming from my 2008 1.9 TDi engine bay area only on shutdown. The noise is fairly bassy, much like a fan winding down where the bearings have gone.
It happens, I would say, about 80% of the time soon after the ignition is turned off. Sometimes it is quite loud, but only lasts for about 3-5 seconds.
I thought it might be the turbo coolant being deployed, or perhaps a cooling fan. I read somewhere about shutting down halfway through a regeneration cycle as well!? I have always been careful to ensure the engine is idle for a few seconds before shutdown as I know the turbo bearings can sometimes weaken.
That is where my knowledge ends! Hence why I seek someones advice?
Thanks!

I popped the bonnet to have a closer look at the noise while someone cut the engine and it seems the noise is coming from deep in the engine bay area where I cannot see that well.
It does sound like an electrical noise, but is no-where near the alternator or the cooling fan/turbo.
Still not sure what it could be. Will now take it to a specialist but if anyone has any similar problem it would be good to know what you think. Thanks.

I took my golf to a specialist and the noise is coming from the vacuum solenoid valve (not sure why I couldn't locate the noise before because its now fairly obvious this is where it's coming from!)
It's not affecting performance for now but a replacement is about £140 + vat at the independent dealer!
Any ideas whether this is an easy job to replace it myself? Looks fairly straightforward to do, but not sure where is best to find a replacement.. eBay?
