Tyres you can leave on all year, and still not die in winter
Discussion
Roads were like a blooming slushy ice rink this morning and I very nearly nudged the car in front depite coming to a stop as slow as you like.
The tyres on my focus (fronts anyway) are near done but I don't want to put a purely winter/snow tyre on the car. Is there something that is decent in winter that I can just leave on all year round?

It doesn't really get hot enough in the UK for winter tyres to cause much of a problem in the summer. Yes, they wear a little faster than summer tyres would because they're softer, but not massively so in my experience; and they don't have quite as much grip as a good set of summer tyres, but I suspect that a good set of winters will be better than a poor set of summers in a British summer.
Alternatively, get a set of all-seasons, but obviously they wont be as good at either role as dedicated seasonal tyres.

Nokian all weather tyre is your friend!

Very good tyre and not too expensive...

It depends on your driving style, I suspect. I found after a long quick A road run at when it was about 10deg that the fronts were worn so each block between sipes was worn to an angle and the squirming was noticeable coming off roundabouts
We've got....
- Kleber Quadraxers on the OHs Merc C220CDi Coupe
- Goodyear Vectors on my little C1 runaround
Both are "all season" but have the "snowflake and mountain" stamp, lots of sipes etc. Both are extremely good in the wet, and (not tried the C1 yet) the Klebers are superb in the snow.
My opinion of the Klebers is that overall they're the best tyres I've ever used - if it wasn't for the fact that the sipes would get worn out I'd use them all year round (they're on a spare set of alloys). Can't comment on the Goodyears yet as they went on a brand new car a couple of months ago so not much experience of. I'm expecting good things though
I think tyres that can perform this well all year will probably become more common as tyre technology improves. For the UK (the north at least) they make perfect sense.

er, this might be a bit obvious, but maybe just get some new normal tyres? If you have massive, 'phat' alloys then remove them.If you are not living in the colder parts of Scotland, you'll be fine.
99% of drivers seem to manage fine all year round on normal tyres without killing themselves, me included.

But.
Last year I put 4x new "normal" tyres on the volvo v70, then it snowed like buggry, as we all remember; the car was total dog$hit, wouldn't even get up the slightest incline.
Saying that, the price for 4 of those Nokians are worth more than my facking car!

It's an X reg 2.0 Zetec BTW, bought new by my Dad and gifted to me 18m ago for a token amount. Prob worth 500 quid but still in brilliant condition. Got the relatively bling 205/50/16's on it BTW.
