I'll start:

The UK will not have to sign up to "common corporation tax" that the 23 want to agree.
- Result, UK can undercut this level of corporation tax and attract more investment into the UK
- What will the Irish do, they always did well by setting low corporation tax to attract organizations to settle there?

The UK will not have to sign up for this Tobin tax on financial transactions
- Result, European financial institutions will move to the UK to avoid this punitive tax resulting in more UK business.
- Anyone think this will still go ahead now our European friends can't rob the UK in this way?

The Euro is still going to go down the pan - nothing's going to stop this.
- Result, hopefully more investment in UK which is seen as a safe haven as compared to the euro region.

Any others? Any downsides anyone can see yet?

...and don't get me started on all the other advantages if we pull out of the EU altogether smile

I await all the postings saying CMD is a complete idiot for not doing it but with no real reason as to why.

The way I see it, CMD has either grown a pair suddenly and this is all good for UK PLC or he is going to renege (again) on his promise.

As long as we still have a free market with the EU, I think it's all good for us. Less ties to EU fiscal policy can only be a good thing.

There is a real reason - the lefties hate him for being rich.

I wish the Euro lot all the best, we may be in a good position if we play our cards right.

CMD needs to get rid of the rest of the EU regulation crap though, and reduce our net contribution to zero (get rid of the CAP for a start). The French will not like that negotiation, Sarko might even cry.

Oh and to those who say they won't accept such a negotiation - no problem, we leave. A UK that doing well economically will be able to give the EU such a choice.

We will get trade access under WTO rules. We import more from EU than we export. So what exactly are we going to lose if we leave EU?

Well we could set our own conditions for entry so we could let them in if we wanted to...

actually this is a real problem about leaving various aspects of the EU. The free flow of Euroepan workers into the UK economy has been pretty good for us.

Look at it from a different viewpoint...we could get all our jobless people to get up and do those jobs that we got others to do for us so far!

But they haven't. and probably won't.

What good? Potentially a lot, not least with the City free of the transaction tax that will hogtie the eeyorezone. The Independent has a typically biased headline today about the PM being isolated, when in fact he isn't as Hungary are taking the same line and two more governments will do likewise if they have any sense. The Indy should have pointed out also that, although being totally isolated was not true, being isolated at all from a bunch of incompetent, bankrupt, clueless people with a collapsing currency while remaining in control of your own country's budget and competitiveness as far as you can is actually a relatively good place to be.

What all the the "lets go it alone" fans fail to understand is the ease with which a different "Europe" can impose tariffs on UK activity. And its not just UK but any outside country which is trying to play the "undercut" card. They're simply not going to sit back and allow themselves to be ripped off by UK.

I remain of the opinion UK needs to be "in" as a major player rather than "out" as a passenger.

Nope, something like 94% of our trade is covered by WTO rules. So its not at all easy for them to impose tariffs.

So there's obviously no need to worry about a financial services tax then.... rolleyes

Tell me what we get out of being in that we can't get from being out?

Being in we have no weight and seem to be contributing way more than we get out and are always on the end of another EU ruling that the UK fall foul of yet this doesn't seem to be the case with any other country.

But we will have more money to pay for the public services that everyone says are essential.

Didn't think that they would be bailed out again and who says that they will need it?

As I think about it how can the euro trade agreement include powers to the EU to let them decide who gets to manage countries doesn't seem like the EU has stayed on track with what it was supposed to be.
